It was jointly developed by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS) at Tsinghua University and the AReaL team at Ant Group. Based on a fully asynchronous RL training paradigm, it is optimized for efficiency and scalability in training large-scale reasoning models and agent models. The main goal of AReaL is to enable developers and researchers to build AI agents more easily, efficiently, and at lower cost. Its highlights include: flexibility (just replace base_url to customize agentic RL and online RL training for black-box agent applications), scalability (stable fully asynchronous RL training with industry-leading speed), and frontier performance (achieving advanced levels on math, coding, search, and customer service agents). The latest version of the project is AReaL 2.0, which adopts a microservices architecture, including independent training, inference, agent, and weight update services, and provides the Hermes online RL loop and an end-to-end SWE RL training example. AReaL also provides the lightweight version AReaL-lite, aimed at rapid prototyping for researchers, with 80% less code while still maintaining 90% of the performance and core functionality.
