Purpose
GitHunt MCP is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides AI assistants with GitHub search capabilities from a "recruiter's perspective." It wraps the GitHunt API, enabling Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients to search a pre-indexed GitHub developer database directly from chat prompts, view scored candidate profiles, and run deep AI analysis on candidates.
Key Capabilities
- Search developers: Retrieve a pre-indexed developer pool by location, role, and skills, returning a list of candidates ranked by match.
- View ranked profiles: Via
get_developerretrieve a single developer's profile information. - Deep AI analysis: Via
analyze_profilerecalculate skill proficiency and role match for a specific candidate, with analysis based on the latest GitHub data. - Scoring system: Each candidate has an overall score composed of three dimensions:
- Profile score: bio, seniority signals, and account maturity.
- Tech-stack score: how well languages and repositories match the requested skills and role.
- Activity score: recency and volume of public contributions (commits, frequency, commit message quality).
- Skill and location normalization: Skill matching supports synonyms (e.g., k8s -> kubernetes), and locations are normalized (e.g., SF, NYC, UK, Warszawa).
- Pagination: Retrieve subsequent candidates for a search via the offset parameter.
- Contact discovery: Results include activity signals and contact information.
Usage
Hosted MCP server (zero configuration)
GitHunt provides a hosted MCP server:https://mcp.githunt.ai/mcp . Add it in Claude as a custom connector (Settings -> Connectors), or add it in your client as a remote MCP server, and sign in with your GitHunt account—no API key or local process required.
Self-hosted (stdio)
This package is a self-hosted stdio alternative.
- Get an API key from your GitHunt account.
- Run the server:
GITHUNT_API_KEY=your-key-here npx githunt-mcp
- Connect to a client:
Add to claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"githunt": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["githunt-mcp"],
"env": {
"GITHUNT_API_KEY": "your-key-here"
}
}
}
}
Add to .cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"githunt": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["githunt-mcp"],
"env": {
"GITHUNT_API_KEY": "your-key-here"
}
}
}
}
Usage is the same for any MCP client that supports stdio: set GITHUNT_API_KEY in the environment and run npx githunt-mcp.
Environment variables
GITHUNT_API_KEY: GitHunt API key (required).
Example prompts
Once connected, you can prompt the assistant in natural language:
- "Find senior frontend developers in Warsaw who know React and TypeScript."
- "Show me hireable DevOps engineers in Poland with 5+ years on GitHub."
- "Give me the next 25 candidates for that search." (pagination via offset)
- "Pull up octocat's GitHunt profile."
- "Do a deep analysis of torvalds - proficiency, best-fit roles, any public emails."
- "Search for ML engineers in San Francisco, then analyze your top 3."
Supported role values
fullstack, frontend, backend, mobile, devops, ai-engineer, ai-orchestrator, ml-engineer, data-scientist, data-engineer, security, cloud, blockchain, embedded, gamedev, ios-developer, android-developer, sre, platform-engineer, qa-engineer, solutions-architect, cto, vp-engineering, head-engineering, engineering-manager, tech-lead, product-manager, director-engineering.

Use Cases
- Candidate lead discovery and initial screening in technical recruiting.
- Quickly generate candidate shortlists by location, role, and skill combination.
- Perform skill and role match analysis for specific candidates based on public GitHub data.
Limitations and Responsible Use
GitHunt reads public GitHub activity, which is strong evidence of technical work, but far from the whole picture:
- It cannot see private repositories, internal and enterprise contributions—many excellent engineers do not have active public profiles.
- The candidate pool is pre-indexed, so brand-new or minimally active accounts may be missing;
analyze_profilefetches real-time data for a specific individual. - Public activity signals may be biased by geography, employer, and career stage.
Use it as a lead generator, not an automated screener. Treat scores as a starting point for human communication, not a hiring decision. GitHub does not represent the entirety of an engineer.
Quota
Requests consume GitHunt plan quota. Each response includes current usage (used / limit for the month), and a quota_exceeded error is returned when the quota is exceeded. See your account for plan limits.
