About this tool

browser-use-mcp-server is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server used to let AI agents control a web browser with the help of browser-use. It can help users browse the web directly from clients such as Cursor and participate in the development of kontext-security/browser-use-mcp-server on GitHub.

Main capabilities:

  • Browser automation: control the browser through AI agents.
  • Dual transport protocols: supports both SSE and stdio modes.
  • VNC streaming: watch browser automation operations in real time.
  • Asynchronous tasks: execute browser operations asynchronously.

Dependencies and related components:

  • uv: a fast Python package manager.
  • Playwright: a browser automation tool.
  • mcp-proxy: required for stdio mode.

Usage: You need to create a .env file and perform client configuration, including SSE mode client configuration and stdio mode client configuration (involving configuration locations). The project provides Docker support to build a consistent isolated environment for running the server. Chromium runs in Docker with a VNC server, and the volume mount in the Dockerfile uses the :ro flag to make the password file inside the container read-only to enhance security. The default password is browser-use (unless overridden using a custom password method).

Local development:

  • Build a distributable wheel: run uv build in the project root directory.
  • Install as a global tool: uv tool uninstall browser-use-mcp-server 2> /dev/null || true, then uv tool install dist/browser_use_mcp_server-*.whl.
  • Run from any directory: set the OpenAI API key for the current session with export OPENAI_API_KEY=your-api-key-here, or run it in one go with OPENAI_API_KEY=your-api-key-here browser-use-mcp-server run server --port 8000 --stdio --proxy-port 9000.
  • Rebuild and reinstall after modifications: uv build, uv tool uninstall browser-use-mcp-server, uv tool install dist/browser_use_mcp_server-*.whl.

Other information: you can ask AI questions to try it out; for questions or inquiries, contact cobrowser.xyz. The project also has a code of conduct.
