About this tool

NewsMCP is a real-time global news MCP server for AI agents, with the tagline "World news for AI agents". This tool is free to use, requires no API key, and can be installed with a single command.

Purpose NewsMCP is used to provide AI agents with real-time world news events. These events are clustered by AI from hundreds of sources, categorized by topic and geographic region, and ranked by importance.

Main capabilities

  • Topic categories: 12 topics in total, namely politics, economy, technology, science, health, environment, sports, culture, crime, military, education, and society.
  • Geographic regions: 30 regions in total, including 6 continents and 24 countries, and can be filtered by europe, asia, united-states, germany, japan, ukraine, etc.
  • News sources: hundreds of sources; articles are clustered into events in real time and ranked by source count and impact score.
  • Tool interface: provides four tools, namely get_news (current trending events, filterable by topic, region, and time window; sorting options include -sources_count, -impact_score, -last_seen_at, -entries_count; the - prefix indicates descending order), get_news_detail (full details of a single event, including all source articles, AI-generated context, impact analysis, and entity tags), list_topics (lists all topic categories available for filtering, no parameters), list_regions (lists all geographic regions available for filtering, no parameters).

Usage

  • Configuration can be added in claude_desktop_config.json to connect to Claude Desktop.
  • Provides Claude Code Plugin and Claude Code MCP integration methods.
  • Configuration can be added in .cursor/mcp.json to connect to Cursor.
  • Can be added to MCP config.
  • Can be added to ~/.codex/config.toml.
  • Can be added to ~/.gemini/settings.json (or a project-local .gemini/settings.json).
  • Can be added to ~/.config/opencode/opencode.json (or a project-local .opencode/opencode.json).
  • OpenClaw Plugin: no configuration required, works out of the box; for options, see @newsmcp/openclaw.
  • Lightweight alternative: a single SKILL.md that teaches agents to call the REST API via curl, with no dependencies; see newsmcp-skill on ClawHub.
  • In addition to MCP, the REST API can also be called directly, with the same data and filters. Base URL:https://newsmcp.io/v1,所有查询参数均为可选,可自由组合。

Workflow

  1. Collect: Continuously crawl hundreds of news sources.
  2. Cluster: Use vector embeddings to group articles about the same event.
  3. Classify: Tag each event with topics and geographic entities.
  4. Rank: Score events by number of sources, influence, and timeliness.
  5. Serve: Provide clean JSON through a REST API and an MCP server. Events are updated in real time as new articles appear, and the clustering AI automatically merges duplicate reports.

Release mechanism The project releases through GitHub Actions + OIDC: releases are driven by .github/workflows/release.yml and are triggered by pushing tags in the form v*... The workflow publishes @newsmcp/server and @newsmcp/openclaw to npm through Trusted Publishing (OIDC), uses mcp-publisher login github-oidc to publish MCP metadata, and creates a GitHub release with generated notes. In the npm package settings, you need to add a Trusted Publisher for @newsmcp/server and @newsmcp/openclaw, pointing to Owner: pranciskus, Repository: newsmcp, Workflow file: .github/workflows/release.yml, with Environment left blank (unless intentionally used). In the MCP Registry, you need to ensure that the repository/package is authorized for GitHub OIDC publishing. Version changes must be updated in packages/mcp-server/package.json, packages/openclaw-plugin/package.json, packages/mcp-server/server.json, and package-lock.json. After committing and pushing to main, create and push the tag, and the workflow will automatically complete the release and GitHub release.

Limitations The materials do not provide more details about charging models, specific prices, usage quotas, data latency, supported languages, etc., and are not yet provided.
