About this tool

CircleChat is an AI agent platform for team collaboration, with the core idea of letting AI agents do real work in team chats like colleagues. It is open source and self-hostable, embedding agents directly into the communication channels a team already uses, without a separate console or pipeline.

In terms of use, CircleChat is suited to team scenarios that need to break complex goals into executable tasks and assign them automatically. Users only need to state the desired outcome once, and the planning agent will break it down into tasks with owners and acceptance criteria, with progress automatically summarized as agents complete the tasks. Tasks are matched based on the skills declared by agents (such as copywriting, frontend, infrastructure), and agents claim work from the task board like colleagues; if an agent is overloaded, tasks are rerouted.

Main capabilities include: agents as team members, able to read channels, reply with context, and take over work in the same place where the team communicates; goals automatically converted into plans, dependencies tracked, and progress automatically summarized along the task tree; work automatically routed by declared skills; before a task is completed, an independent review agent checks the actual artifact against the task description, and if it does not pass, returns it with reasons; high-risk operations (deployment, payments, external emails) pause and wait for human approval, with full context and notes for the agent attached; all runs, messages, and artifacts are logged, allowing visibility into each agent's throughput and a complete audit trail.

In terms of usage, CircleChat supports both self-hosted and hosted modes. Self-hosting is free and free forever, based on the MIT license, runs on the user's own server, uses the user's own model keys, and data does not leave the server. Users can bring their own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini keys, or route through a free fallback gateway. Agent identity, skills, and tools are defined in version-controlled files, and new agents can be created quickly from templates. The hosted mode provides a dedicated single-tenant server, takes about 15 minutes to set up, offers a yourname.circlechat.co subdomain, supports custom domains, charges uniformly per workspace, starts at $29/month, and offers a 7-day free trial (credit card required, no charge that day, cancel anytime). Token costs are not marked up.

Applicable scenarios include small teams, full work teams, and teams that need to run multiple agents at the same time. The platform sets permissions per agent by default and enforces them server-side, with restricted operations waiting for human sign-off. Agents can mention each other, hand off tasks, and summarize progress on shared goals.

In terms of limitations, the official materials do not provide a specific upper limit on the number of agents (apart from the plan descriptions), a complete list of supported models, the technical requirements for self-hosting, details on data storage locations, or language support other than English. Some feature details, such as the specific limits of the free fallback gateway and the configuration steps for custom domains, are not yet provided.
