Ivy-Tendril is an open-source software development tool for the "agent era," officially positioned as an "agent software factory for 10x builders." Its core idea is that when AI agents can already write 99% of the code, the developer's role shifts to judging "what is a good result," which therefore requires entirely new development tools, and Tendril is the tool meant to replace the traditional IDE.
Purpose
Tendril is used to help developers organize, review, verify, and merge code produced by AI agents in workflows where AI agents generate large amounts of code. It integrates agent runs, code review, plan management, and task intake into a desktop application, shifting developers from writing code to controlling quality and direction.
Main Capabilities
- Parallel Worktrees: Run agents in isolated Git worktrees, keeping the main branch clean until the developer reviews, approves, and merges changes.
- Tunnels and Remote/Mobile Coding: Securely expose the server through Cloudflare Quick Tunnels, allowing agent runs to be monitored and guided from anywhere.
- Voice and Rich Input: Built-in Whisper voice input allows prompts to be dictated; supports drag-and-drop attachment of text files, logs, or documents.
- Plan Annotations: Allows inline annotations on drafts, automatically updating the plan with revised agent goals.
- Powerful Code Review: Review agent changes, inspect diffs, and approve code through automated verification gates.
- GitHub Integration and Automatic Inbox: Connects to GitHub Issues or jam.dev bug reports via webhook, automatically turning Markdown plans into active tasks.
- Compatible with Any CLI Agent: As long as it can run in a terminal, it can run in Tendril, including Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, OpenCode, and more.
- Official Skill Extensions: Provides Tendril engineering and debugging skills, which can be installed for supported agents through a universal skill installer, and specific skills can also be installed.
How to Use
Tendril is a desktop application. Standalone installers (.pkg, .AppImage, .exe) can be downloaded from GitHub Releases, and it can also be launched and controlled via CLI: launch the desktop application, or start it in headless modeserver (a web server without a desktop UI).
Regarding skill installation, an official universal skill installer is provided, and skills can also be installed for specific tools. For example, GitHub Copilot in VS Code can be installed globally, or skills can be copied to .agents/skills/, .github/skills/ (project-level), or ~/.copilot/skills/ (global). After installation, skills appear in the /skills menu of GitHub Copilot Chat and can be invoked directly as slash commands, such as /tendril-debug-plan, /tendril-debug-job, /tendril-review, /tendrillable.
Third-party VS Code agent extensions also support skill installation, such as Cline, Continue, and Roo Code, each using the corresponding npx skills add command. For full editor integration, the official Ivy Tendril VS Code extension can be installed to get an embedded plan dashboard, worktree navigation, and real-time execution monitoring.
Other integration methods include: installing from the Claude Code marketplace or installing for local development; installing plugins via Git URL or installing locally; installing for Cursor, or copying skills to .cursor/skills/ (project-level) or ~/.cursor/skills/ (global); installing from the Codex plugin marketplace; and installing using Gemini CLI. Each environment has a corresponding setup guide.
Use Cases
Suitable for developers or teams that need to keep the main branch clean when AI agents produce large amounts of code, manage multiple agent tasks in parallel, and perform strict code review and automated verification. It is also suitable for scenarios where users want to monitor agent runs remotely or from mobile devices, quickly input prompts via voice, and automatically convert GitHub Issues or bug reports into development tasks.
Limitations
Official materials do not provide specific system requirements, performance metrics, or pricing information. Tendril is source-available software and uses the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-ALv2). Some integration features depend on the availability of third-party tools (such as Cloudflare Quick Tunnels, GitHub, jam.dev, Whisper, and various CLI agents).
