About this tool

bitcoin-mcp is a Bitcoin and Lightning Network MCP (Model Context Protocol) server designed to enable AI models to interact with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. It allows AI to generate keys, validate addresses, decode transactions, query the blockchain, and perform other operations.

Main capabilities (Available Tools):

  • Key Generation: Create new Bitcoin key pairs, including address, public key, and private key (WIF).
  • Address Validation: Verify the correctness of a Bitcoin address.
  • Transaction Decoding: Parse a raw Bitcoin transaction and display its details in a human-readable format.
  • Blockchain Queries:
    • Latest Block: Get detailed information about the latest block (hash, height, timestamp, transaction count, etc.).
    • Transaction Details: Get detailed information about a transaction using its TXID.
  • Lightning Network:
    • Invoice Decoding: Parse a BOLT11 Lightning invoice and display human-readable information.
    • Payment: Pay a Lightning invoice directly from an LNBits wallet.

How to use:

  1. Claude Desktop integration:

    • Download and install Claude Desktop.
    • Configure Claude Desktop to use the bitcoin-mcp server: add an entry in the "mcpServers" section of the configuration file, for example: { "mcpServers": { "bitcoin-mcp": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "bitcoin-mcp@latest"] } } }
    • Configuration file location: macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json; Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json.
    • After restarting Claude Desktop, you can test by asking, for example, "What's the latest block on the Bitcoin network?".
  2. Goose integration:

    • Goose is an open-source AI agent framework developed by Block that supports extension through MCP.
    • Supports two modes: STDIO (local extension) and SSE (remote extension).
    • STDIO mode: Add an extension in Goose, select Command-Line Extension, enter the name and command (such as npx -y bitcoin-mcp@latest), and use goose session --with-extension "bitcoin" when starting a session.
    • SSE mode: Run the MCP server as a standalone service, add a Remote Extension in Goose, and provide the server URL (such as http://localhost:9000)。

Applicable scenarios:

  • Scenarios that require an AI model to query Bitcoin blockchain data, decode transactions, validate addresses, or interact with the Lightning Network.
  • Integration with AI tools that support MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Goose, to enhance their Bitcoin-related capabilities.

Limitations:

  • Lightning Network configuration is optional and requires an LNBits wallet.
  • Specific feature implementation and dependencies may require reference to the official documentation.
  • Further information such as error handling and development setup is provided in the repository.
