About this tool

Agent-MCP is a multi-agent collaboration protocol framework designed to enable coordinated AI software development through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This framework is intended for experienced AI developers and requires familiarity with AI coding workflows, the MCP protocol, and distributed systems concepts.

Purpose

Agent-MCP is used to create multi-agent systems that allow multiple specialized agents to work in parallel on different aspects of a project. It addresses the practical problems of traditional AI coding assistants: context window overflow in large codebases, loss of knowledge between conversations, single-threaded execution bottlenecks, lack of specialization, and repeated rework caused by lost context and confusion.

Key capabilities

  • Parallel execution: Multiple specialized agents work simultaneously on different parts of the codebase, for example a backend agent handling APIs and a frontend agent building UI components, all coordinated through shared memory.
  • Persistent knowledge graph: The project's complete context is stored in a searchable persistent memory store, and agents query shared knowledge to understand requirements, architectural decisions, and implementation details.
  • Intelligent task management: Monitor each agent's status, assigned tasks, and recent activity, automatically manage task dependencies, and prevent conflicts.
  • Real-time visualization: A dashboard displays the working status of the AI team, with purple nodes representing context entries, blue nodes representing agents, and connections showing active collaboration.

Usage

Agent-MCP can run as an MCP server, exposing multi-agent capabilities to MCP-compatible clients such as Claude Desktop and Cline. Configuration example (mcp_config.json):

{ "mcpServers": { "agent-mcp": { "command": "uv", "args": ["run", "-m", "agent_mcp.cli", "--port", "8080"], "env": { "OPENAI_API_KEY": "your-openai-api-key" } } } }

After adding it to the Claude Desktop configuration and restarting, once the connection is verified the following MCP tools can be used:

  • Agent management: create_agent, list_agents, terminate_agent
  • Task orchestration: assign_task, view_tasks, update_task_status
  • Knowledge management: ask_project_rag, update_project_context, view_project_context
  • Communication: send_agent_message, broadcast_message, request_assistance

The development workflow includes: initializing the administrator agent, loading the project blueprint (MCD), deploying the agent team, initializing and deploying workers, and monitoring and coordination. The dashboard can be accessed via http://localhost:3847 .

Suitable scenarios

Suitable for AI application developers who need advanced multi-agent orchestration capabilities and are building applications that benefit from multiple specialized agents working in parallel. Users new to AI-assisted development can start with simpler tools.

Limitations

This framework is explicitly intended for experienced AI developers and requires knowledge of the MCP protocol and distributed systems. Documentation and ease of use are still being improved. The system is limited to a maximum of 10 active agents, agents that are idle for more than 60 seconds are terminated, and tasks are terminated immediately after completion.
