Brave Leo

Brave Leo is an intelligent AI assistant built into the Brave browser, focused on privacy protection. Users can chat with any tab without an account or login, letting Leo summarize web pages, generate content, translate, analyze text, and more. Leo does not retain or share chat history, nor does it use it for model training. It supports personalized preferences, bring your own model (local or remote), analyzing PDFs, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, and uses Brave Search to provide richer, more up-to-date answers. Leo offers a free version and a paid premium version, with the premium version providing access to more models and faster responses. It is currently available in the Brave browser on desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux) and mobile (Android, iOS).

About this tool

Brave Leo is an AI assistant built into the Brave browser, designed to let users get AI help without leaving the current tab while maintaining a high level of privacy protection.

Purpose: Leo can be used to summarize web pages, documents, or PDFs, answer general questions, generate content such as articles and emails, perform language translation, and provide programming help (such as suggesting code and sample code, database queries). Users can also ask Leo questions about the content of the currently open tab to get summaries, clarifications, related information, and different perspectives.

Key capabilities:

  • Chat with any tab: Let Leo summarize web pages, generate content, translate, analyze text, and more without switching pages.
  • Privacy protection: Leo does not retain or share chat history, nor does it use it for additional model training. It can be used without an account or login.
  • Personalization: Preferences can be set for Leo to remember during chats, making responses more contextual and targeted while maintaining privacy.
  • Bring your own model (BYOM): Supports running your own AI models, whether local or remote, and can also connect to third-party APIs for more control.
  • Fast and accurate insights: Can analyze PDFs, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, among others, to help get the information you need faster.
  • Brave Search enhancement: Leo uses Brave Search to supplement answers with richer details and the latest information.
  • Temporary chats: Temporary chats are not recorded in history and are deleted immediately after closing.
  • Tab management: Can organize and find tabs on specific topics, and even collect them into a new window.
  • Save conversations locally: Conversations can be saved and reviewed locally on the device, or continued later.
  • Voice input: On iOS, you can ask Leo questions via speech-to-text without typing.

How to use:

  • Desktop: Type in the address bar and select "Ask Leo," or click the Leo icon in the toolbar.
  • Mobile: Tap the browser menu button and select the Leo AI icon to start a new conversation.
  • Access chat history: View, continue, or delete conversations through the full-page view (brave://leo-ai) or the browser sidebar.
  • Install Brave: Download the installer, run the installer, then import browser settings from Chrome.

Use cases:

  • Quickly summarize web pages, documents, or PDFs.
  • Answer general questions and get summaries, clarifications, related information, and different perspectives.
  • Create content such as articles, essays, and emails.
  • Multilingual translation.
  • Programming help, providing suggested code and sample code.
  • Analyze files such as PDFs, Google Docs, and Google Sheets.

Limitations and notes:

  • As with any AI, Leo's responses may contain misleading information or factual errors, and biases or harmful content in the training data may sometimes be reflected in the output. It is recommended to double-check Leo's responses, for example by trying the same query on Brave Search.
  • Hallucination is an inherent challenge of LLMs, and regenerating the answer may sometimes help.
  • Leo's availability may be affected by traffic and usage levels; subscribing to Leo Premium provides higher usage limits.
  • The free version requires no account or registration; Leo Premium subscribers need to create a Premium account, solely to verify premium access, and that account is completely unlinkable to Leo usage.
  • Conversations are not persisted for model training.
  • Chat history can be stored locally on the device, regardless of which model is selected.
  • Currently available on the desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux) and mobile (Android, iOS) versions of the Brave browser.
  • Both the free and premium versions can access the latest models from Mixtral, Anthropic's Claude, and Meta's Llama; the specific available model versions need to be viewed by opening Brave Leo.
  • Regarding the servers that power Brave Leo, the browser shares the latest prompt, the current conversation context, and (when required by the use case) the necessary context of the page being viewed. No identifiers that can be linked to an individual (such as IP address) are collected, and no personal data is retained.
