About this tool

EssayGenius is a writing workspace for students, positioned to help users plan essays, use verified sources, draft clearly, and revise confidently. Its core philosophy is "think clearly, write confidently," emphasizing that AI is used to sharpen arguments, not to replace the user's own voice.

In terms of purpose, EssayGenius covers multiple stages of academic writing: extracting the real requirements from an assignment prompt and forming a supportable essay angle, keeping real sources, notes, and citations alongside the draft so that every argument has support, and checking argument, citations, audience, and grading criteria before submission, prioritizing fixes for the issues that most affect the grade.

Main capabilities include: quickly clarifying the writing angle and plan from a vague assignment prompt; searching for sources using real academic databases (such as OpenAlex and Crossref), providing usable DOIs and links rather than generating fabricated citations; displaying sources, notes, and citations side by side with paragraphs during writing, reducing tab switching; providing argument, citation, audience, and grading criteria checks that point out the weaknesses most in need of improvement; automatically saving every draft with a timestamp, and exporting a process report showing how the essay took shape from outline to final paragraph; supporting offline writing, with edits saved locally and synced once back online; importing citations and reference information from a Zotero library; supporting export of drafts to Word, PDF, Markdown, HTML, or plain text; allowing links to be shared with friends, mentors, or teaching assistants to collect comments; detecting whether wording is too close to a source and rewriting it in advance; supporting writing in English while preserving personal voice, which is helpful for non-native English speakers.

In terms of how to use it, users can upload an assignment prompt, extract the real requirements, and start writing; keep sources and citations alongside the draft; use AI for feedback, but the final judgment and wording remain the user's responsibility. The free version can be started without an account or credit card and includes unlimited essays, source organization, citations in all major styles, Word and PDF export, one full essay draft, and 25 AI messages and 100 inline suggestions per month. The Pro version costs $40 every 4 months, or an average of $10 per month, and adds academic source discovery, full-text review, citation integrity checks, voice matching, essay analysis and research-supported revisions, as well as higher AI usage limits. Downgrading does not delete essays, notes, or sources; it only changes the monthly AI limits.

Applicable scenarios include argumentative essays, research papers, literary analysis, history essays, reflective essays, and most academic writing that requires arguments and evidence, and it is especially suitable for situations that require collecting sources, shaping arguments, and revising according to grading criteria. It also supports personal statements for college and scholarship applications, but it is recommended to be more cautious with this type of high-stakes writing. It is not suitable for fiction, poetry, or technical genres such as code or formal proofs.

In terms of limitations, EssayGenius does not have a one-click "write the whole essay" feature, and by design it requires that submitted content come from the user. AI detectors are unreliable, and it is recommended to follow the course's disclosure policy. Source results come from real academic databases, but users still need to open each source to confirm whether it supports the specific argument. AI suggestions should be judged like mentor feedback rather than accepted directly. If a course completely prohibits AI assistance, it should not be used in that course. User essays are stored by default in the device's browser, and when AI features are used, only the relevant text is sent to providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic, whose contracts prohibit its use for training models. Cloud-synced drafts are encrypted in transit and at rest, data is not sold or shared, and no ads or tracking cookies are run.
