About this tool

Purpose

autopilot-jobhunt is an AI job-hunting agent that runs on your local machine. Its goal is to automate the most time-consuming part of the job search: every night it scans the career pages of over 130 companies, uses an LLM to compare and score each job against your resume point by point, pushes the best-matching jobs to you via Telegram, and generates tailored resume and cover letter drafts when needed.

Main capabilities

  • Nightly scanning: Automatically scans 130+ company career pages every night. The repository comes with 130+ EU, New Zealand, and remote-friendly tech companies preloaded, which can be added or removed via companies.json.
  • Resume matching and scoring: The scoring prompt uses your real resume rather than keywords. The LLM reads your full work history and the job description, gives a score from 0–100, and explains in one sentence why it is or is not a match. You can filter via min_score in config, default 60.
  • Telegram notifications: Pushes high-scoring jobs to Telegram.
  • Draft generation: Generates tailored resume and cover letter drafts on demand.
  • Drafts only, never auto-submit: All drafts are reviewed by you and submitted by you. The cases in which data leaves your machine are described in PRIVACY.md.

How to use

Two installation modes are provided, using the same configuration and producing the same output:

  • Option A — pip install
  • Option B — clone the repository (recommended, for easier customization of the company list or contributing)

The full process (API key setup, Claude Code MCP registration, rate limit details, troubleshooting) is in SETUP.md.

Using as an MCP server

autopilot-jobhunt can be used as an MCP server in Claude Code (CLI) or Claude Desktop:

  1. Enable MCP support during installation.
  2. Register with Claude Code: use a single command, or manually edit ~/.claude.json. Note that cwd must point to the cloned repository, because the server reads config.json and companies.json from that directory.
  3. In Claude Desktop, under Settings → Developer, the mAdd the same JSON block under cpServers.

Custom target companies

Edit companies.json; each entry requires the corresponding fields. The repository comes with 130+ preconfigured companies.

LLM backend options

  • Default: OpenRouter (free): Uses a 4-model fallback chain, all free, no credit card required. When a model reaches its daily free quota, it automatically tries the next one, with zero LLM cost by default.
  • Alternative A: Claude Code CLI (no API key required): If Claude Code is installed and authenticated, it can be used as the LLM backend. Set it in config.json, or via the environment variable LLM_PROVIDER=claude_cli autopilot scan. You can optionally set the model (sonnet, opus, haiku; leave blank for the Claude default). The claude binary must be in PATH; you can first verify with claude --print "hi". The MCP server and cron jobs must run in an environment where the Claude authenticated session is valid. Rate limit note: each call loads the global Claude Code context (about 25-30k tokens), and nightly scans (5-15 LLM calls) will significantly consume the subscription's 7-day rate limit. It is recommended to prioritize OpenRouter for nightly automation, and use the Claude CLI for occasional on-demand draft generation.
  • Alternative B: Anthropic API: If you have an Anthropic API key, claude-haiku-4-5-20251001 is fast and cheap, while claude-sonnet-4-6 provides higher scoring quality. A nightly scan uses about 5-15 LLM calls in total (jobs are scored in batches of 10).

Use cases

Suitable for job seekers who want to automate job screening and reduce the time spent manually browsing large numbers of recruiting pages, especially those focused on EU, New Zealand, and remote tech positions. Also suitable for users who want to integrate the job search process into Claude Code / Claude Desktop workflows.

Limitations

  • Only generates drafts; it does not auto-apply, and manual review and submission are required.
  • When using the Claude Code CLI as the backend, it is affected by subscription rate limits and is not suitable for highfrequency nightly automation.
  • The company list must be maintained by yourself; by default it covers EU, New Zealand, and remote-friendly tech companies.
  • The project uses the MIT license.
