About this tool

Local AI is a native application for local AI model experimentation, designed to simplify the entire experimentation workflow, without complex technical setup and without a GPU. It is free and open source, uses a Rust backend, and is therefore memory-efficient and compact, at less than 10MB on Mac M2, Windows, and Linux .deb.

Purpose: Local AI is mainly used to experiment with AI models locally, offline, and privately. It provides local AI management, verification, and inference capabilities, and is suitable for users who want to try AI models without a GPU or without wanting to perform complex configuration.

Main capabilities:

  • CPU inference: Supports CPU inference, and can adapt to available threads.
  • Quantization support: Supports GGML quantization q4, 5.1, 8, f16.
  • Model management: Tracks AI models in one place, with the option to choose any directory; supports resumable concurrent downloads, sorting based on usage frequency, directory independence, nested directories, custom sorting, and search.
  • Digest verification: Ensures the integrity of downloaded models through BLAKE3 and SHA256 digest computation; provides a known-good model API, license and usage tags, fast BLAKE3 checks, and model information cards.
  • Model recommendations: Provides a model recommendation feature.
  • Inference server: Start a local streaming server in two steps—load the model, then start the server; provides a streaming server, a fast inference interface, inference parameters, and a remote vocabulary.

How to use: According to official information, when using the inference server, you only need to load the model, then start the server. Model management allows users to choose any directory to store models, and supports downloading, sorting, and search. The digest verification feature can perform integrity checks on downloaded models.

Use cases: Suitable for users who need to experiment with AI models locally, offline, and in a private environment, especially those without a GPU or who want to avoid complex technical setup. It is also suitable for scenarios that require managing multiple models, verifying model integrity, or quickly starting a local inference server.

Limitations and upcoming features: The current version supports CPU inference; GPU inference and parallel sessions are upcoming features. Other limitations are not provided at this time.
