About this tool

Purpose

DreamFactory MCP is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server used to integrate DreamFactory with Claude. DreamFactory itself is a secure, self-hosted enterprise data access platform that provides governed API access to any data source, connecting enterprise applications with local LLMs, and has role-based access control (RBAC) and identity passthrough capabilities. Through this MCP server, users can use DreamFactory's capabilities in the Claude interface to securely access on-premises and cloud-based MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL databases, and other data sources.

Main Capabilities

  • As an MCP server, integrate DreamFactory into Claude.
  • Relying on the DreamFactory platform, provide governed API access to any data source.
  • Support role-based access control (RBAC) and identity passthrough.
  • Can connect enterprise applications with local LLMs.
  • Support configuring the DreamFactory service URL and API key through environment variables.

Usage

Desktop Extension Installation (Claude Desktop only)

The simplest way is to go to the releases page of this repository and download the latest Desktop Extension file (DXT format, created by Anthropic). After downloading, double-click the DXT file to begin installation; Claude Desktop must be installed first. During installation, you will be prompted to enter the DreamFactory API key and service URL; if you do not have this information yet, you can click Cancel, and later you can add it by clicking Configure in the Extensions tab of Settings. In either case, before use you must manually switch the Disabled toggle to Enabled.

Manual Installation

  1. Clone the repository and install dependencies:
    cd df-mcp
    npm install

  2. Build the project:
    npm run build

Configure Claude Desktop

  1. From https://claude.ai/download install Claude Desktop.
  2. Open Claude Desktop and go to Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu, go to the "Developer" section.
  4. Click "Edit Config" to modify the Claude configuration.
  5. Add the following configuration to enable the DreamFactory MCP server:
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "add": {
          "command": "node",
          "args": [
            "/Users/dreamfactory/Documents/df-mcp/build/index.js"
          ],
          "env": {
            "DREAMFACTORY_URL": "https://example.dreamfactory.com/api/v2/<service-name>",
            "DREAMFACTORY_API_KEY": ""
          }
        }
      }
    }

    Important: If the local installation path is different from /Users/dreamfactory/Documents/df-mcp/, please modify the path in the args array.
  6. Add the DreamFactory URL and API key as needed to the DREAMFACTORY_URL and DREAMFACTORY_API_KEY environment variables.
  7. Save the configuration and restart Claude Desktop.

Notes on Claude Desktop, NodeJS, and NVM

DreamFactory MCP requires Node 22.10.0 or newer. Even if you are running Node 22.10 or newer, you may encounter installation issues if you use NVM (Node Version Manager). If you also use other development tools that modify the Node path, such as Laravel Herd, the problem may be more complicated. If the MCP server logs show that Claude Desktop is using the wrong Node version, you can create a shell script to force it to use the required version, name the script node-for-claude.sh or something similar, place it in /usr/local/bin, then make it executable, and finally update the claude_desktop_config.json file to point to that script. After configuration is complete, the DreamFactory MCP server can be used in Claude Desktop.

Docker MCP Setup (for Claude Desktop)

After building the Docker image, add the following configuration to the Claude Desktop configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

After updating the configuration, restart Claude Desktop to load the MCP server. You can runThe line contains test scripts to verify the Docker setup, confirming that the container builds correctly, responds to MCP commands, and that all tools are registered correctly.

Source Code and Build

  • The source code is located in the src directory.
  • The build files are located in the build directory.
  • Use npm start to run the built server directly.

Use Cases

  • Data connection between enterprise applications and local LLMs.
  • Secure access via Claude to local and cloud-based MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other databases and data sources.
  • Governed data access scenarios that require role-based access control and identity passthrough.

Limitations

  • The desktop extension installation method is limited to Claude Desktop.
  • Requires Node 22.10.0 or later.
  • Node path-related issues may be encountered when using tools such as NVM or Laravel Herd.
  • The DreamFactory API key and service URL must be configured before use.
  • Specific information such as other fees, pricing, and platform support is not yet provided.
