About this tool

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant, managed by the OpenClaw Foundation (a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization). It runs on the user's own machine and can be interacted with through 29 chat channels including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal, and iMessage, supporting both private and group chats.

Purpose: OpenClaw is designed to be an AI agent running on a personal computer, helping users handle everyday matters such as managing their inbox, email, calendar, flights, and more. It can also be used as a team or family assistant, sharing a single gateway so team members can jointly open and guide sessions.

Main capabilities:

  • Runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows, with state stored locally rather than in a vendor cloud.
  • Supports persistent memory, able to remember the user's preferences, projects, and people.
  • Provides full system access: browsing the web, filling out forms, reading and writing files, running shell commands, with an optional sandbox mode.
  • Supports team collaboration: shared gateway, real-time presence, and commit records attributed to individuals.
  • Supports skills and plugin extensions, with community skills or self-built ones, and you can even write your own skills.
  • Supports multiple model sources: hosted, subscription, gateway, or local models.
  • Update channels can be switched via openclaw update --channel dev or openclaw update --channel stable.

Usage:

  • Installation: provides a one-line install command that automatically installs Node.js and other dependencies.
  • Platform support: runs natively on macOS, Linux, and Windows; on Windows it can run sandboxed in Microsoft Execution Containers.
  • Chat integration: converse with the assistant through supported chat apps.
  • Account login: you can log in to OpenClaw with a ChatGPT account and use its subscription.
  • Mobile: provides native iOS and Android apps, supporting chat, Talk mode, and remote action approval, paired to your own gateway.
  • Enterprise edition: OpenClaw Enterprise is an open-source, vendor-neutral platform for managing persistent agents in sensitive environments.

Use cases:

  • Personal affairs management: clearing large amounts of email, reviewing presentations, building CLI tools, optimizing Google Ads, drafting posts, managing schedules, handling invoices, and more.
  • Team collaboration: shared gateway, with multiple people jointly guiding sessions.
  • Automated workflows: proactive actions through cron jobs, reminders, and background tasks.
  • Security review: Tencent AIG joins ClawScan to conduct security reviews of every skill and plugin uploaded to ClawHub.
  • Enterprise environments: managing persistent agents in sensitive environments.

Limitations:

  • Some features (such as specific pricing and billing models) are not yet provided.
  • Users need to install and configure it themselves, which may pose a certain barrier for non-technical users.
  • Security and stability may vary by version and configuration; community feedback mentions that update stability issues have improved.
  • Complete information on the specific list of supported models, channel details, and system requirements is not yet provided.
