Roomote current product and licensing boundary

Roomote is a source-available AI engineering teammate that can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure or used via its cloud service. It runs real development environments in isolated environments, verifies work, reviews code with different models, and returns reviewable PRs with live previews, supporting multi-model mixing, parallel tasks, automated responses, and Slack/Teams/Discord/Telegram integrations.

About this tool

Roomote is an AI engineering teammate, positioned as a cloud coding agent that can be owned, inspected, and modified, rather than an IDE plugin or Copilot. It runs on the user's own infrastructure (or the officially hosted cloud version), executes tasks in isolated sandboxes, and returns reviewable PRs upon completion.

Key capabilities

  • Runs real development environments and verifies work: Roomote actually runs the application before the call completes, self-reviews changes, identifies problems early, and, when necessary, attaches preview links or screenshots as proof.
  • Multi-model mixing and BYOK: Freely combine different providers and models, choosing the most suitable model for each task based on performance, latency, or cost; supports frontier models, open-weight models, large or local models, and bring your own API key.
  • Parallel tasks and multi-user collaboration: Supports unlimited parallel tasks, maintains conversation context, and can make consistent changes across repositories and environments; also supports multiple users collaborating in real time on the same task.
  • Automation and proactive response: Can automatically execute tasks on a schedule (not limited to coding), monitor systems, and automatically respond to issues before humans are aware of them; can automatically handle incoming issues or proactively find improvement points.
  • Connects to existing toolchains: Connects to repositories, issue trackers, logs, documentation, databases, observability, analytics, and data warehouses, using the same tools and context as the team.
  • Built-in analytics and cost insights: Provides usage and inference cost analysis across dimensions such as models, providers, task types, and users, along with interactive charts.
  • Multi-platform access: Can be used in Slack, Teams, Discord, and Telegram, naturally suited for asynchronous and mobile use, with an additional mobile web UI.

How to use

  • Cloud version: Roomote Cloud is a single-tenant deployment that can be up and running in about 2 minutes, offering a 7-day free trial (no credit card required), after which plans start at $49 per month; users only need to provide their own inference keys.
  • Self-hosting: Run the official command on a Linux machine, or use the alternatives in templates/documentation, to complete deployment on your own infrastructure in about 10 minutes; all features are included.
  • Licensing: Source-available, using the Fair Core License 1.0 (ALv2 Future License). You can read, self-host, modify, and redistribute it, and permitted uses include internal use, education, research, and professional services; you may not use Roomote or substantially similar functionality as a competing commercialProduct or service provision, may not bypass license key-protected functionality (i.e., deployment for more than 10 users). Each release receives an irrevocable Apache 2.0 license on its second anniversary. Self-hosting for up to 10 users requires no license; paid self-hosted licenses do not include a free trial.

Use cases

  • Engineering teams: achieve autonomous coding while keeping source code, prompts, and workflows visible and controllable, for answer queries, scope fixes, migrations, investigations, and reviewable PRs.
  • Individual developers: want to own a cloud agent and run it at low cost, especially on open-weight models.
  • Non-engineers: build without local setup, because results are trustworthy and the interface is easy to use.
  • Regulated industries: code and conversations remain within their own environment, and the single-tenant design facilitates compliance.

Limitations and boundaries

  • License restrictions: Roomote or substantially similar functionality may not be offered as a competing commercial product or service; license key-protected functionality (deployment for more than 10 users) may not be bypassed.
  • Paid self-hosted licenses do not include a free trial; the cloud version offers a 7-day free trial.
  • Currently uses OpenCode as the underlying harness; alternatives may be changed or added in the future.
  • The website uses cookies, some necessary and some optional.
  • The cloud version requires users to provide their own inference key.

Other notes

Roomote and local IDE/editor tools (such as Cursor, Copilot, Claude Code, etc.) are complementary: the latter are used to write code in the IDE, while Roomote is a cloud agent that runs in your own infrastructure, works across systems, and returns readable, reviewable output. It is officially described as going beyond a "cloud harness," able to work reliably end-to-end and easy to use.
