What is Step1X-Edit
Step1X-Edit is a general image editing framework launched by the StepFun team, capable of narrowing the performance gap between open-source image editing models and closed-source models (such as GPT-4o and Gemini2 Flash). Step1X-Edit combines a multimodal large language model (MLLM) and a diffusion model, based on processing reference images and the user's editing instructions, to extract latent embeddings and generate the target image. To train the model, researchers built a large-scale, high-quality data generation pipeline, generating over 1 million pairs of image and instruction pairs. Step1X-Edit proposes a new benchmark, GEdit-Bench, for evaluation on real-world user instructions.
Main Features of Step1X-Edit
- Diverse editing capabilities: Supports a variety of image editing tasks, including subject addition, removal, and replacement, background changes, color adjustment, material modification, style transfer, portrait beautification, text modification, tone changes, etc.
- Natural language instruction-driven: Users describe their editing needs in natural language, and the model can understand and execute complex editing instructions.
- High-quality image generation: Supports generating high-fidelity, realistic image results.
- Real-world scenario adaptation: Trained on large-scale, high-quality datasets, handling various complex editing scenarios in the real world.
Technical Principles of Step1X-Edit
- Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM): Based on MLLM processing reference images and the user's editing instructions, extracting semantic information. Leveraging the powerful semantic understanding capability of MLLM, it generates embedding vectors related to the editing task.
- Diffusion Model: Combined with a diffusion model (such as a DiT-style architecture) for image generation. Using the high-fidelity generation capability of the diffusion model, the embedding vectors provided by the MLLM are decoded into the target image.
- Data generation pipeline: Builds a large-scale, high-quality data generation pipeline, generating over 1 million pairs of image and instruction pairs. The data pipeline covers multiple categories of editing tasks, ensuring the model can learn diverse editing operations.
- Training strategy: Initialized from a text-to-image model, preserving aesthetic quality and visual consistency. Based on joint training of the connection module and the downstream diffusion model, the overall performance is optimized.
- Benchmark (GEdit-Bench): Introduces the GEdit-Bench benchmark based on real user instructions, evaluating the model's actual performance. GEdit-Bench contains a variety of editing tasks, ensuring the model's effectiveness in real scenarios.
