About this tool

What is MLX

MLX is an array framework for machine learning launched by Apple's machine learning research team. The open-source framework is designed and optimized specifically for Apple Silicon chips. Drawing inspiration from frameworks such as NumPy, PyTorch, Jax, and ArrayFire, it provides a simple and friendly way to use, helping developers effectively develop, train, and deploy models on Apple M-series chips. MLX supports multi-device operations (such as CPU and GPU) and adopts a unified memory model, allowing operations to be performed without copying data between devices.

MLX

Main features of MLX

  • Familiar API: MLX closely follows NumPy's Python API. MLX has a fully featured C++ API that is very similar to the Python API.
  • Composable function transformations: MLX supports composable function transformations for automatic differentiation, automatic vectorization, and computational graph optimization.
  • Lazy computation: Computation in MLX is lazy; arrays are only materialized when needed.
  • Dynamic graph construction: Computational graphs in MLX are constructed dynamically. Changing the shape of function arguments does not trigger slow compilation, and debugging is simple and intuitive.
  • Multi-device: Can run on any supported device (CPU and GPU).
  • Unified memory: The main difference between MLX and other frameworks is the unified memory model, where arrays share memory. Operations on MLX can run on any supported device type without moving data.

How to use MLX

  • Install MLX: Install the MLX library through a package management tool.
  • Import the library: Import the MLX library in a Python script to start using its features.
  • Create arrays: Use MLX's array creation functions, similar to the NumPy way, to create data structures for machine learning.
  • Perform operations: Use the rich set of operation functions provided by MLX to compute and transform arrays; operations automatically take advantage of features such as lazy computation and automatic differentiation.
  • Device management: Allocate operations to different devices (such as CPU or GPU) as needed, and MLX automatically handles communication between devices.
  • Model construction: Build machine learning models with MLX, using automatic vectorization and computational graph optimization to improve model efficiency.
  • Training and optimization: Train and optimize models through the optimizers and training loops provided by MLX.
  • Saving and loading: Save trained models or data to files, or load them from files for later use.
