What Is Machine Learning
Machine Learning is a data analysis technique that, as a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science, focuses on using data and algorithms to mimic the way humans learn and gradually improve its accuracy. It teaches computers to do what humans and animals do naturally: learn from experience. Machine learning algorithms use computational methods to "learn" information directly from data without relying on predetermined equations as models.
Technical Categories of Machine Learning
Machine learning techniques can be divided into three major categories: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning.
- Supervised learning algorithms are used to create models based on known input and output data to make future predictions.
- Unsupervised learning detects hidden patterns in input data to make predictions.
- Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning that can use feedback from its own actions and experience to learn in an interactive environment through repeated trial and error.
Common Machine Learning Algorithms
In the current field of artificial intelligence, there are a variety of popular machine learning algorithms, including:
- Neural networks: Neural networks simulate the way the human brain works and have a large number of linked processing nodes. Neural networks are good at recognizing patterns and play an important role in applications such as natural language translation, image recognition, speech recognition, and image creation.
- Logistic regression: This algorithm is used to predict numerical values based on a linear relationship between different values. For example, this technique can be used to predict housing prices based on historical data for the area.
- Clustering: This supervised learning algorithm makes predictions for categorical response variables, such as "yes/no" answers to a question. It can be used in applications such as spam classification and quality control on production lines.
- Cluserting: Using unsupervised learning, clustering algorithms can identify patterns in data in order to group them. Computers can help data scientists by identifying differences between data items that humans overlook.
- Decision tress: Decision trees can be used both to predict numerical values (regression) and to classify data. Decision trees use a branching sequence of linked decisions that can be represented with a tree diagram. One advantage of decision trees is that, unlike the black box of neural networks, they are easy to verify and audit.
- Random forests: In a random forest, a machine learning algorithm predicts a value or category by combining the results of multiple decision trees.
Practical Applications of Machine Learning
Machine learning has a wide range of application scenarios in various fields, some of the most common of which include:
- Image recognition: Machine learning is used to identify objects, people, places, and more in images and videos.
- Speech recognition: Machine learning is used to convert speech into text and vice versa.
- Natural language processing: Machine learning is used to understand and interpret human language.
- Recommendation systems: Machine learning is used to recommend products or services to users based on their past behavior.
- Anomaly detection: Machine learning is used to detect abnormal patterns or behavior in data.
- Fraud detection: Machine learning is used to detect fraudulent activity in financial transactions.
- Predictive maintenance: Machine learning is used to predict when machines or equipment may fail.
- Robotics: Machine learning is used to teach robots to perform tasks.
- Self-driving cars: Machine learning is used to enable cars to drive themselves, such as Google's Waymo, Tesla's FSD, and Baidu's Apollo autonomous driving.
