What is WebSSL
WebSSL (Web-scale Self-Supervised Learning) is a series of visual self-supervised learning (SSL) models launched by Meta, New York University, and other institutions. It trains visual models based on large-scale web data (such as billions of images) without language-supervised learning. WebSSL includes multiple model variants, such as Web-DINO and Web-MAE, with parameter scales ranging from 300 million to 7 billion. The models perform excellently in multimodal tasks (such as visual question answering VQA, OCR, and chart understanding), even surpassing models that rely on language supervision (such as CLIP). The core advantages of WebSSL lie in its ability to use large-scale data and its sensitivity to data distribution. By filtering image data containing more text, it significantly improves OCR and chart understanding capabilities.
Main features of WebSSL
- No language supervision required: Trained on large-scale image data, it can learn effective visual representations without language supervision.
- Excellent performance in multimodal tasks: In multimodal tasks such as visual question answering (VQA), OCR, and chart understanding, its performance matches or even surpasses language-supervised models (such as CLIP).
- Data filtering improves performance on specific tasks: Based on filtering image data containing more text, it improves OCR and chart understanding capabilities.
- Strong scalability of model and data scale: As model capacity and training data increase, performance continues to improve.
Technical principles of WebSSL
- Self-supervised learning (SSL): Based on self-supervised learning methods, such as contrastive learning or masked image modeling, it learns visual representations from large-scale unlabeled image data. Contrastive learning brings different augmented views of the same image closer and pushes apart augmented views of different images, learning semantic representations of images. Masked image modeling learns the local and global structure of images by predicting masked parts of images.
- Large-scale data training: Trained with large-scale web data, the diversity and scale of the data provide rich learning materials for the model. By increasing the scale of training data, the model can learn broader and more complex visual concepts.
- Model scaling: Scaling the model's parameter size (from 300 million to 7 billion parameters) improves the model's learning ability and representation ability. Large-scale models can capture more complex visual patterns and semantic information, performing excellently in multimodal tasks.
- Data filtering: Filtering image data containing more text (such as charts, documents, etc.) improves OCR and chart understanding capabilities. The data filtering strategy allows the model to focus on learning text-related visual features and perform better in related tasks.
- Evaluation of multimodal tasks: Using visual question answering (VQA) as the main evaluation framework, covering multiple task categories (such as general, knowledge, OCR and charts, and vision-centric tasks). Comprehensive evaluation methods can better reflect the model's performance in practical applications.
