What is VideoPhy
VideoPhy is the first benchmark jointly launched by UCLA and Google Research to evaluate the physical commonsense capabilities of video generation models, measuring whether videos generated by models follow real-world physical rules. The VideoPhy benchmark contains 688 captions describing physical interactions, used to generate videos from various text-to-video models for human and automated evaluation. The study found that even the best models produced only 39.6% of videos that simultaneously followed the text prompts and physical laws. VideoPhy highlights the limitations of video generation models in simulating the physical world and introduces the automated evaluation tool VideoCon-Physics to support reliable evaluation of future models.
Main Features of VideoPhy
- Evaluating the Physical Commonsense of Video Generation Models: Testing whether text-to-video generation models can generate video content that conforms to physical commonsense.
- Providing a Standardized Test Set: Contains 688 human-verified descriptive captions involving solid-solid, solid-fluid, and fluid-fluid physical interactions, used to generate videos and conduct evaluations.
- Human Evaluation and Automated Evaluation: VideoPhy combines human evaluation and the automated evaluation tool VideoCon-Physics to assess the semantic consistency and physical commonsense of videos.
- Model Performance Comparison: Compares the performance of different models on the VideoPhy dataset to determine which models perform better in following physical laws.
- Promoting Model Improvement: Reveals the shortcomings of existing models in simulating the physical world, driving researchers to develop video generation models that better conform to physical commonsense.
Technical Principles of VideoPhy
- Dataset Construction: The VideoPhy dataset is constructed based on a three-stage process, including using large language models to generate candidate captions, human verification of caption quality, and annotation of video generation difficulty.
- Video Generation: Uses different text-to-video generation models to generate videos based on the captions in the VideoPhy dataset.
- Human Evaluation: Human evaluators on Amazon Mechanical Turk rate the generated videos for semantic consistency and physical commonsense.
- Automated Evaluation Model: Introduces VideoCon-Physics, an automated evaluator based on the VIDEOCON video-language model, fine-tuned to assess the semantic consistency and physical commonsense of generated videos.
- Performance Metrics: Uses binary feedback (0 or 1) to evaluate the semantic adherence (SA) and physical commonsense (PC) of videos.
