Purpose agents-md-cookbook provides a tested, tool-agnostic AGENTS.md toolkit. AGENTS.md is a Markdown file placed at the repository root, used to tell coding agents how to build, test, and work within the project. According to the materials, the standard is managed by the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, already exists in 60,000+ repositories, and is natively read by 24+ tools.
Main capabilities
- Provides 15 templates divided by tech stack, each template being a complete, copy-paste-ready AGENTS.md.
- Provides a tool compatibility matrix explaining the support for AGENTS.md across different agent tools.
- Provides a linter in the form of an npm CLI and GitHub Action: agents-md-lint, used to score AGENTS.md and fail in CI due to regressions.
- Provides a migration tool agents-md-migrate, which can convert existing CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md, etc. into a clean AGENTS.md.
- The repository itself runs agents-md-lint on its own templates in CI (dogfooding).
Usage
-
Copy a template: curl -fsSL
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Taiizor/agents-md-cookbook/main/templates/typescript-node/AGENTS.md
-o AGENTS.md The filename must be exactly AGENTS.md (uppercase AGENTS, lowercase .md). For other tech stacks, browse the full template index. -
Migrate existing configuration: bunx agents-md-migrate
or: npx agents-md-migrate
This command detects files such as CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md, etc., and generates a single AGENTS.md. This tool is published by the agents-md-migrate package.
- Lint in CI:
.github/workflows/ci.yml
- name: Lint AGENTS.md run: bunx agents-md-lint AGENTS.md
or: npx agents-md-lint AGENTS.md
You can also use the repository's built-in action.yml as a one-line GitHub Action:
.github/workflows/ci.yml
- uses: Taiizor/agents-md-cookbook@v1 with: path: AGENTS.md
These two CLIs are located under packages/ and are released under a separate release plan. They can be run via bunx or npx without installation.
Use cases
- Need to share the same project instructions across multiple coding agent tools (such as Cursor, Codex, Copilot, Windsurf, Cline, Zed, Jules, Amp, etc.).
- Want to unify scattered configurations such as .cursorrules, CLAUDE.md, Copilot, Windsurf, Cline, Aider, etc. into AGENTS.md.
- Want to continuously validate the accuracy and structure of AGENTS.md in CI.
- For monorepos and projects that need nesting or fallback mechanisms (see COMPATIBILITY.md for details).
Limitations and notes
- The AGENTS.md filename must be exactly AGENTS.md, uppercase AGENTS, lowercase .md.
- Templates are deliberately kept short (the materials mention 60-150 lines), with command-first, real code snippets, clear boundaries as principles; lengthy architecture articles and token bloat are discouraged.
- Regarding pricing, fees, specific platform support status, specific performance data, complete feature lists, etc., the materials do not currently provide them, and the repository's actual documentation and code should be taken as authoritative.
- The compatibility matrix, nesting behavior, self-file fallback, and source notes are in COMPATIBILITY.md, which includes a dated last-verified line.
Additional notes The materials mention that the template design references evidence such as GitHub's research on 2,500+ repositories, ETH Zurich's AGENTbench, and Augment's golden-PR evaluation; however, the specific research conclusions are not expanded upon here.
