FileToPDF MCP server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for converting files, HTML, and Markdown to PDF. It is aimed at any MCP-capable client, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, VS Code, ChatGPT, n8n, Make, and user-built agents. Users can initiate conversions through natural language, such as invoices, reports, documents, DOCX/XLSX/PPTX, images, web pages, and more.
Main capabilities:
- Supports converting DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, images, HTML, Markdown, and more to PDF.
- Each conversion returns a metadata summary and returns the PDF as an embedded application/pdf resource (base64); clients with the corresponding capability can save the file.
- The PDF can also be written to disk by setting the FILETOPDF_OUTPUT_DIR environment variable or by passing the save_path parameter.
- Layout options (landscape, paperWidth/Height, margins, scale, pdfa, passwords, etc.) are available in Pro, Scale, and the free trial; in Starter/Basic versions, an upgrade error is returned.
- Each successful conversion consumes 1 credit; errors are not charged.

- Local/stdio quick start:
- Cursor: one-click install (Add to Cursor), then replace the placeholder with your key.
- Claude Desktop / Cline / any stdio client: add to the MCP configuration (claude_desktop_config.json, cline_mcp_settings.json, etc.).
- VS Code: configure in .vscode/mcp.json, or add via MCP: Add Server.
- Hosted/remote (Streamable HTTP) requires no installation: the hosted endpoint is https://api.filetopdf.dev/mcp。通过 Authenticate with your own key using the x-api-key request header, Authorization: Bearer request header, or ?apiKey= query parameter. This URL can also be pasted into any platform with an MCP client step, such as n8n (MCP Client Tool), Make (MCP Client), Zapier (MCP Client beta), Relay.app (Call MCP tool), Flowise, Langflow, Dify, LibreChat, AnythingLLM, or agent frameworks (OpenAI Agents SDK, LangChain, CrewAI, Vercel AI SDK).
- Self-hosting: the repository includes a Dockerfile, which can be used for container hosting (Smithery, Fly, Render, Cloud Run).
- Testing: npm test reads FILETOPDF_API_KEY, or reads API_KEY= from the gitignored .env.
