Purpose
Mentalyc is an AI scribe tool designed exclusively for the psychotherapy and behavioral health field, with the goal of helping professionals such as therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers free themselves from clinical documentation. Its official positioning emphasizes "keeping therapists fully present, with all session-related documentation completed by the time they leave," giving therapists their evenings back while staying audit-ready and continuously tracking each client's growth.
Main Capabilities
- Automatic clinical note generation: Supports common formats such as SOAP, DAP, BIRP, GIRP, PIE, intake notes, mental status examination (MSE), biopsychosocial assessments, supervision notes, and treatment plans. After recording a session, it can automatically generate a complete SOAP note and draft treatment plan goal updates, suggested activity scheduling worksheets, and weekly activity tracking.
- Cross-session "one golden thread": Notes continue to build on previous sessions, treatment plan goals, and tracked symptoms, so fewer changes are needed.
- Treatment planning and progress tracking: Includes a treatment planner, progress tracking, and therapeutic alliance rating feedback similar to supervision feedback, matched with worksheet recommendations.
- Flexible session capture methods: You can directly record telehealth or in-person sessions (with consent required), upload audio, dictate a recap, or directly enter a brief summary, without requiring changes to your existing workflow.
- EHR integration: Works with any EHR and can also be used without one; supports SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane App, and others, with one-click sync and export of notes.
- Time and earnings estimates: You can enter team size and session volume to see hours saved per month and revenue recovered (based on Mentalyc internal data).
How to Use
Official instructions say setup takes under 5 minutes: sign up with an email, choose a note format (SOAP, DAP, BIRP, or another), and generate your first note. The 14-day free trial requires no credit card. No need to switch EHRs, install software, or migrate data. If you need to sync notes to SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, or another EHR, integration takes only one extra step, with in-app guidance. The workflow is roughly three steps: capture the session, review the AI notes/plan/insights, and export to your EHR.
Use Cases
Suitable for all types of mental health and behavioral health professionals:
- Psychiatrists and PMHNPs: medication management notes, psychiatric evaluations, structured MSE documentation.
- Clinical and medical social workers: case notes, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans.
- Licensed counselors: substance use, marriage and family, school counseling documentation.
- Psychologists: testing summaries, progress tracking, cross-session analysis.
- Independent practitioners and group practices: the independent plan is aimed at individual therapists and counselors; group practices can purchase by seat, and practice owners can also view the work saved by each clinician.
Pricing
Officially announced: annual plans start at $14.99/month. Independent plans include Mini, Basic, Pro, and Super; the most complete independent plan, Super, is $99.99/month billed annually ($119.99/month billed monthly), including 330 notes per month. The free trial provides 14 days of full Pro access and 15 notes, with no credit card required. Group practice Team seats are $49.99/seat/month billed annually, or $59.99 billed monthly, with unlimited access to all features. See the pricing page for complete pricing and feature comparisons.
Security and Compliance
Officially stated, Mentalyc is fully HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II compliant, and complies with the Australian Privacy Principles as well as Canadian PIPEDA, PHIPA, PIPA, and PHIA standards. Notes use end-to-end encryption, and data resides in the United States. Full data anonymization is provided: session audio is deleted once the note is ready, transcripts are de-identified, and session data is never used to train AI models. A Business Associate Agreement (BAA) is created for every account at registration, and a personal copy can be downloaded at any time from profile settings, whether for independent practice or as a group member.
Differences from General-Purpose Tools
Officially emphasized, general-purpose ChatGPT solutions for therapists do not come with a BAA and do not integrate with EHRs; users must write their own prompts, maintain each client's history, and check the format. Mentalyc is a tool built specifically for clinical documentation, with compliance, structured notes, cross-session client case retention, and EHR sync. Officially described as therapist technology that replaces multiple separate tools: AI notes, AI treatment plans, AI progress tracking, and therapeutic alliance insights.
