myinstants-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server designed to provide soundboard functionality for AI agents. It connects to myinstants.com—the largest soundboard on the internet, containing millions of meme sounds, vine booms, fart sounds, anime clips, game sounds, and more. Through this server, AI agents can search, play, and browse these sounds.
Main capabilities:
- Search for any sound on myinstants.
- Play sounds, output through speakers.
- Browse categories, including memes, games, movies, reactions, TikTok trends, and more.
- View current trending topics.
- Optionally wait for sound playback to finish (blocking) or play in the background.
- Sounds are automatically queued, do not overlap, and multiple sounds can be played consecutively.
- Supports audio device selection (requires setting the MYINSTANTS_DEVICE environment variable, and using the ffplay or mpv player).
- Provides the list_devices tool (requires setting MYINSTANTS_DETAILS=true) to discover available audio devices.
Usage:
- Configure it in MCP-supported clients, such as VS Code / GitHub Copilot (user settings or .vscode/mcp.json), Claude Desktop (~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json), Cursor (.cursor/mcp.json).
- Works out of the box on macOS (using native afplay), with no additional installation required. On Linux, run sudo apt install ffmpeg.
- Automatic player detection: on macOS, afplay is preferred, then ffplay, and finally mpv.
- You can specify the player via the MYINSTANTS_PLAYER environment variable, and the output device via MYINSTANTS_DEVICE.
- You can create a .instructions.md file (with applyTo: "**" in the frontmatter) to let the agent play sounds while working.
Applicable scenarios:
- Add fun sound feedback for AI agents, for example playing a vine boom when code compilation succeeds, or playing a sad trombone when a test fails.
- Play sounds to liven up the atmosphere in scenarios such as code reviews.
- Any AI interaction scenario that requires sound playback.
Limitations:
- macOS's afplay does not support device selection; use ffplay or mpv instead.
- The Windows PowerShell player does not support device selection; install ffmpeg or mpv.
- Device names vary by platform.
- Some features (such as list_devices) require setting the MYINSTANTS_DETAILS=true environment variable.
- Depends on the availability of the myinstants.com service.
