Purpose
apogeoapi-mcp is the MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for ApogeoAPI, used to provide geographic data, real-time exchange rates, and IP geolocation query capabilities to Claude Desktop, Cursor, and any MCP-compatible AI assistant. The server exposes ApogeoAPI's REST endpoints as tools that AI assistants can call.
Main capabilities
- Geographic data queries (countries, states, cities)
- Real-time exchange rate queries
- IP geolocation All of the above tools are read-only and declare MCP tool annotations (readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, idempotentHint, openWorldHint), so clients can run them directly without confirmation prompts.
Usage
Add the configuration in claude_desktop_config.json:
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
- Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json After saving the file, restart Claude Desktop, and the ApogeoAPI tools will appear in Claude's tool list.
Add the same configuration block under mcpServers in Cursor's MCP configuration file (~/.cursor/mcp.json), then reference the built file directly.
Getting an API key
- Create a free account at app.apogeoapi.com
- Go to API Keys to generate a new key
- Paste the key into the APOGEOAPI_KEY environment variable in the configuration
Plan requirements
The Free plan includes 1,000 requests per month and requires no credit card. New accounts get 14 days of full access. Full access to Basic+ tools requires an upgrade; upgrade at: app.apogeoapi.com/dashboard/billing.
Testing
npm test builds the server, starts it over stdio as a real MCP client, and calls each tool against the live API. Testing requires a key with access to all tools (Basic+ or an account within the 14-day trial period).
Use cases
Suitable for users who need to query geographic information, exchange rates, or IP geolocation directly in an AI assistant conversation. For example, when asking "What is the current USD exchange rate in Argentina?" or "Locate IP 8.8.8.8", the assistant will automatically call the corresponding tool.
Limitations
The materials do not provide any other limitation notes.
