MeiGen AI Design MCP is an open-source MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool for discovering inspiration and generating images and videos within AI assistants. It is aimed at AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and OpenClaw. Its official description states that it supports GPT Image 2, Seedance, and ComfyUI, and includes a built-in library of 1,400+ prompts, carefully designed hooks, and a multi-task orchestration system.
In terms of use, the tool's core goal is to connect image and video generation capabilities to the AI assistants users use every day: users can first browse and save inspiration in MeiGen, then return to the assistant to continue creating; they can also search for inspiration directly in the conversation, view reference images and prompts, and have the assistant prepare inputs, call models, and return results.
Main capabilities include:
- Inspiration search and prompt library: you can search for inspiration in directions such as minimalist product photography, displaying reference images and prompts; under remote MCP, you can request another batch of similar search results, or describe a new direction. Searches and model/Skill queries do not consume generation credits.
- Model and Skill queries: the assistant checks available models, options, and prices via list_models / list_skills, then prepares inputs and returns results.
- Image and video generation: supports GPT Image 2, Seedance, and ComfyUI; video references follow the frames, content images, video, and audio inputs supported by each model. Media preparation does not consume generation credits, but the account must have a positive purchased balance, and it will create temporary public URLs that are cleared after seven days.
- Personal library access: via remote OAuth, the assistant can search favorites, browse boards, find past creations, and read selected original prompts; it can also save selected inspiration or its own results on request, optionally to a private board. Saving requires a user request or prior permission, is not published publicly, and does not consume generation credits. Reading and saving use different account permissions, and existing connections may require additional authorization.
- Character reuse: saved characters can be read and reused via OAuth; creating characters is not supported.
In terms of usage, the official recommendation is to use remote OAuth for new connections: add the Streamable HTTP URL in the client's MCP settings, then select Connect / Authenticate and log in to MeiGen. OAuth requires client support; if unavailable, a compatible host or the official ChatGPT plugin may be used; a new API key cannot replace account login. After connecting, you can ask "List MeiGen's available Skills and current prices" to verify the connection without generating.
For existing local integrations and BYOK workflows, the stdio configuration can continue to be used; Node.js 22+ is recommended; the existing local API key is stored as MEIGEN_API_TOKEN in the server's private environment and remains compatible with generation, public search, and Skills, but cannot access private libraries. OpenAI-compatible providers support general image generation; video and the five visual Skills use MeiGen Cloud.
When upgrading from 2.x, 3.0.0 has been released on npm, removing ComfyUI and the bundled offline prompt library; existing credentials and settings must be retained during the upgrade. The Claude plugin provides /meigen:setup, /meigen:gen, /meigen:find, /meigen:models, and optional creative agents; OpenClaw can install the 4.1 plugin from ClawHub, including creative guides and remote tools (including OAuth-only favorites, canvases, and history). The standalone creative-toolkit Skill is for reference only and is not needed when used together with the plugin.
Applicable scenarios include: image/video inspiration search and reference within AI assistants, creation based on the prompt library, multi-task orchestration, reuse of personal favorites and characters, and general image generation through OpenAI-compatible providers.
Limitations and notes: search and model/Skill queries do not consume generation credits; MeiGen Cloud generation uses credits already purchased for the account, the daily free quota does not apply, and current prices should be checked and the scope confirmed before generating. Media preparation requires a positive purchased balance; temporary public URLs are cleared after seven days. Local npm and API keys cannot access private libraries. If generation is interrupted, first use check_generation or check_skill to check the original task before initiating a new paid request, and retain the original materials and download results that need to be kept. The open-source server is free to use, while cloud generation and third-party providers have their own usage costs. The project is licensed under MIT.
