About this tool

Purpose

mcp-ashby is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for accessing public Ashby job boards. Ashby is recruiting software, and every company that uses it comes with a public job board showing that company's open positions, including job title, department and team, employment type, location and whether remote, the full job ad, and any compensation information the company chooses to make public (salary ranges, equity shares, commission or bonus, each with its own pay period). Ashby maintains one board per company and does not provide a cross-board index.

This server connects chat clients to these boards. The user specifies the companies of interest, and the server resolves each company name to the identifier of the corresponding board, searches its jobs, filters by department, team, location, country, employment type, remote, posting date, or compensation, reads the full content of a single job, lists the vocabulary each board actually uses, and compares the compensation of multiple jobs side by side. No API key, no account.

Main capabilities

  • Resolve company boards: Convert a company name into the identifier of an Ashby board. Four forms are tried for each name, so "not found" does not prove that the company is not on Ashby.
  • Search jobs: Search the jobs of a specified company, returning job title, department, team, employment type, location, country, number of secondary locations, workplace type, whether remote, posting date (including the timezone offset of the Ashby posting), compensation summary, job page URL, and application URL. Search rows do not include the ad body. Results distinguish the total number of jobs on the board, the number of jobs matching the criteria, and the number of jobs returned this time.
  • Read a full job: Read the full job ad of a single job, including description, location, and the compensation components the company makes public. html is the company's original markup, unmodified.
  • List filter values: List the vocabulary actually used by a board and the number of jobs for each value, and point out spelling variants that differ only in case or spaces.
  • Compare compensation: Compare one compensation component of multiple jobs side by side. Only one component is compared at a time (equity and salary cannot be added together). Jobs priced in different periods are listed separately without conversion. Results indicate the currencies involved and list jobs whose company did not make compensation public (not public does not mean zero).

Usage

One-click install

Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, and any client using the standard configuration format. Requires Node 24 or higher, no environment variables need to be set.

In the install command, -i keeps standard input open (the protocol transport channel), omit -t because a TTY rewrites the stream. The container needs outbound HTTPS to api.ashbyhq.com , and nothing else: no volumes, no ports, no credentials.

Bundle without npm

Download from the latest release mcp-ashby-2.0.1.mcpb and open. Clients that support MCP bundles install automatically, with no npm and no configuration file editing. The bundle includes its dependencies and downloads nothing during installation.

Examples of questions you can ask

  • "Is Ramp hiring on Ashby?"
  • "Help me find remote design jobs at Ramp and Linear."
  • "Read that job to me in full."
  • "What departments does that board group jobs under?"
  • "Compare the salaries of those engineering jobs side by side."

Every question starts with a company, because Ashby does not provide cross-board search.search_jobs resolves the given names itself, with no advance preparation needed. Each board has its own departments and teams, so filters written with another board's vocabulary will return no results.list_filter_values will publish the vocabulary actually used by a certain board.

Use as a library

The layers that read Ashby can be published separately, with their own pacing control, caching, and error handling, without the protocol attached.ClientOptions accepts minIntervalMs、timeoutMs、cacheTtlMs and fetchImpl. Intervals below the published lower bound are ignored, so the lower bound also applies here.

Applicable scenarios

  • Job seekers or recruiters querying a specific company's public jobs on Ashby.
  • Filtering jobs by department, team, location, country, employment type, remote, posting time, or compensation.
  • Reading the full job ad for a single job.
  • Understanding the vocabulary of departments, teams, etc. actually used by a certain board, so as to filter correctly.
  • Comparing the same compensation component across multiple jobs side by side.

Limitations

  • Every question must start from a company; Ashby does not provide cross-board search.
  • Each board has its own department and team vocabulary; using filters across boards may return no results.
  • Search rows do not include the ad body; use get_job to read the full content.
  • Compensation comparison can only compare one component at a time; jobs with different periods are not converted or annualized.
  • Jobs for which the company has not published compensation return empty, not zero.
  • Requests are issued one by one, with an interval of at least one second; this lower bound is not affected by client configuration. Ashby returns the entire board at once, which may reach several megabytes, so one question about a company consumes one request, and the server briefly caches the answer.
  • The server does not read any environment variables and requires no configuration.
  • Each failure carries one of six codes, a message, and, when helpful, the values that would have been acceptable.
  • This MCP server is an unofficial project and is not affiliated with Ashby or the companies whose boards it reads.
  • The server does not collect user information, does not send anything to the author, runs locally, and only contacts api.ashbyhq.com, keeping answers in memory at runtime and not writing to disk.
  • Tests run against generated fixed data and do not make network requests. The live test suite npm run test:live makes one request per route and runs nightly against the service itself.
  • The license is MIT. Job content belongs to the companies that post it.

Privacy and attribution

The server does not collect any user information and does not send anything to the author. It runs locally and only contacts api.ashbyhq.com, keeping answers in memory at runtime and not writing to disk.PRIVACY.md explains what requests carry and which settings change that. Each job carries its Ashby page address and application URL. When displaying jobs, the company should be noted and the page linked.
