Purpose
Camprtron is a campground-finding tool for U.S. campers, with the goal of helping users find camping locations "near the outdoor activities they want to do." It covers two types of campsites at the same time: free dispersed camping sites (dispersed camping / boondocking, mainly located in national forests and BLM land) and reservable developed campgrounds (suitable for RVs and trailers). It is officially said to cover all 50 U.S. states.
Main capabilities
- Activity-based location search: users can specify a starting point, driving time range, and preferred activities (such as mountain biking, kayaking, fly fishing, hiking, foraging). The system searches for dispersed campsites and developed campgrounds within the range, and shows the actual distance from the campsite to targets such as peaks, water, fishing spots, walking trails, and mountain bike trails.
- Vehicle access guidance: each result is marked with whether the road is passable for a standard car, a high-clearance vehicle, or a four-wheel-drive vehicle. It is officially explained that this is only a label and warning, not a filter criterion.
- Free and paid campsites listed together: free dispersed campsites and reservable developed campgrounds appear in the same list, and it is officially emphasized that sorting is not changed by payment.
- No ads and no paid ranking: it is officially stated that there are no ads, no sponsored listings, and no paid ranking boosts. The data is built and verified based on official records from USFS, BLM, and RIDB, rather than advertising or crowdsourcing.
- Reservation-related: developed campgrounds are shown as reservable, and when fees are involved they are marked as Fee site.
How to use
Users first set their departure location, the distance/time they are willing to drive, and then choose the type of activity they want to do. The system searches for dispersed and developed campsites within that range, returns results, and shows the resource distances and vehicle access level around each campsite. The official example search is: starting from Austin, Texas, with a maximum 4-hour drive, prioritizing water and fishing (the example is for demonstration purposes and is not a real-time result).
Use cases
Suitable for users planning to camp in U.S. national forests, BLM land, or developed campgrounds and who want to choose a location around a specific outdoor activity (fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, foraging, etc.); also suitable for self-driving and RV campers who need to know in advance the vehicle requirements for roads. Example campsites include Apgar Group Sites in Glacier National Park, Montana; Red Rocks Group Campground in Pike-San Isabel National Forest, Colorado; Black River Harbor Campground in Ottawa National Forest, Michigan; Buncombe Creek at Lake Texoma, Oklahoma; Deer Creek Lake Day Use at Deer Creek Lake, Ohio; Kirkham in Boise National Forest, Idaho; and others.
Fees and limitations
A 3-day free trial is officially offered, with no credit card required. After the trial ends, a subscription is required to continue using the search function: $5.99 per month, or $49 per year (about $4.08 per month, saving about 32%). Campsites cannot receive a higher ranking by paying. The dataset coverage figure is a real-time count of the official dataset, in which one record usually represents one campsite or camping spot, except that when some state agencies only publish park-level GIS data, records are counted by park unit. More details about features and content (such as data update frequency, mobile support, registration process, etc.) are not yet provided.
