About this tool

Augments MCP Server is a server that provides Claude Code with real-time framework documentation access through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Its MCP name is dev.augments/mcp, and it is designed to return types, descriptions, and examples for any npm package, using context-aware formatting rather than being limited to curated packages.

Key capabilities

  • Documentation-first search (new in v7): Queries like "prisma findMany with pagination" or "zustand create store with middleware" now return real documentation content. The BM25 search engine indexes documentation fetched from GitHub by heading chunks, and supports API name weighting and synonym expansion.
  • Concept synonyms: 25 synonym clusters cover state, form, fetch, animation, routing, auth, cache, effect, middleware, pagination, validation, testing, streaming, error handling, database, layout, modal, table, upload, realtime, deployment, i18n, SSR, component, and context patterns. Bidirectional lookup means "usestate" expands to the "state" cluster.
  • Intent-aware formatting.
  • Production-grade reliability (new in v7): npm registry retries use exponential backoff with jitter and support 429 Retry-After; the CDN circuit breaker skips repeatedly failing CDN endpoints (3 failures within 5 minutes); GitHub rate limits track the remaining quota and skip fetching when exhausted; all modules that use caching use an LRU cache with hit/miss statistics.
  • Supports any npm package: Every npm package works out of the box, with no curation or configuration required. Augments automatically resolves documentation through a four-layer mechanism: documentation search (fetches real documentation from GitHub repositories and indexes it with BM25), TypeScript types (the package's own "types" or DefinitelyTyped's @types/*), auto-discovery documentation (parses the npm repository field, finds the GitHub repository, and probes the docs/ directory), and README fallback (extracts concept-related code blocks and descriptions from README.md). This means augments works across the entire npm ecosystem (about 2.5 million packages), not just a curated subset.
  • Enhanced results for popular frameworks: 22 frameworks have curated documentation sources to provide richer examples, including React, Next.js, Vue, Prisma, Zod, Supabase, TanStack Query, tRPC, React Hook Form, Framer Motion, Express, Zustand, Jotai, Drizzle, SWR, Vitest, Playwright, Fastify, Hono, Solid, Svelte, Angular, and Redux.
  • Barrel export handling: Special submodule resolution is provided for React Hook Form, TanStack Query, Zustand, Jotai, tRPC, Drizzle ORM, and Next.js.

Usage Add the following to the MCP configuration (the source material does not provide a complete example of the specific configuration format). The GITHUB_TOKEN environment variable can be set to increase the GitHub API rate limit when fetching examples and documentation.

Use cases Suitable for developers using Claude Code for development who need real-time queries of framework or npm package documentation, types, and examples.

Limitations The source material does not provide specific pricing, cost, platform support scope, or performance metrics. The documentation mentions "How Augments Compares to Context7" but does not provide specific comparison content.
