Purpose
reuse-before-generate aims to solve the problem of AI coding assistants being overly eager to build code from scratch. When users ask AI to build an application or module, AI often generates thousands of lines of brand-new code even when battle-tested open-source libraries or well-maintained tools already exist. This tool intervenes in the AI workflow before code generation begins, checking existing solutions first and helping users discover and reuse existing maintainable alternatives instead of rebuilding them.
Main Capabilities
- Intercepts the AI workflow before code generation and searches public code and package indexes.
- Checks multiple sources in parallel from multiple angles, including GitHub, npm, and Python repositories.
- Formats search results into structured Markdown for easy reading and use by AI.
- Guides AI to further search for existing SaaS products and community discussions on the web.
- All newly added sources use public endpoints, require no API keys, and are queried on a best-effort basis; if a source is unavailable or rate-limited, results from other sources are still returned.
- A GitHub token is optional and is only used to increase GitHub's search rate limit.
How to Use
This tool provides multiple ways to use it:
- Claude Code CLI: Can be used directly in the Claude Code command line.
- MCP client configuration: In Cursor, Claude Desktop, Antigravity, Windsurf, or VS Code, add the configuration to the mcpServers configuration item (for example, ~/.claude/mcp.json, ~/.gemini/antigravity-ide/mcp_config.json, or Cursor settings). Optionally pass in a GitHub token to increase the GitHub rate limit.
- Terminal CLI mode: Run searches directly in the shell without an MCP client.
- Slash command / Agent Skill: In supported AI coding assistants (such as Antigravity and Claude Code), it can be invoked directly via a slash command.
In addition, to make AI assistants automatically check for existing solutions before writing code, you can add the corresponding instructions to CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md, or AGENTS.md.
Applicable Scenarios
- Before starting a new project or new module, when you want to first confirm whether a mature open-source solution already exists.
- When using an AI coding assistant, to avoid it generating large amounts of duplicate code or code for which ready-made implementations already exist.
- When you need to quickly search for maintainable alternative libraries or tools in the GitHub, npm, and Python ecosystems.
- When you want to automate and integrate the "reuse first, then generate" check process into the AI coding workflow.
Limitations
- Each source is queried on a best-effort basis; if a source is unavailable or rate-limited, results from that source may be missing.
- A GitHub token is optional; when no token is provided, GitHub's search rate limit is lower.
- Detailed content regarding specific installation commands, configuration code snippets, and slash commands is not fully provided in the original material and is therefore not provided here for now.
