Purpose
AniList MCP Server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server used to interface with the AniList API, enabling LLM clients to access and interact with anime, manga, character, staff, and user data on AniList.
Main Capabilities
- Search anime, manga, characters, staff, and studios
- Get detailed information about specific anime, manga, characters, and staff
- Access user profiles and lists
- Support advanced filtering options
- Get genres and media tags
- Dual transport support: supports both HTTP and STDIO transports
- Cloud deployment support: compatible with Smithery and other platforms
Usage
Local Installation (STDIO Transport)
Add this server to your mcp.json / claude_desktop_config.json. If you do not plan to use AniList Token operations that require login, you can remove the env object entirely. Restart the MCP client (such as Claude Desktop), then use the tools to interact with AniList.
Server Deployment (HTTP Transport)
Set up the project locally according to the local development instructions, then run it. By default, the server starts on port 8081, and the port can be changed by setting the PORT environment variable.
Cloud Deployment
This MCP server can be deployed to any cloud platform that supports Node.js server applications, and can also be deployed through MCP platforms such as Smithery.
Environment Variables (STDIO Transport and HTTP Transport Server with Configuration Provided by the Host)
When using STDIO transport or hosting an HTTP transport server, configuration can be passed through environment variables:
- ANILIST_TOKEN: (Optional) AniList API Token (only required for login-related operations)
If you host an HTTP transport server with a preconfigured token, you should protect the endpoint and implement authentication before allowing users to access it; otherwise, anyone can access your MCP server while using your AniList token.
HTTP Headers (HTTP Transport with Configuration Provided by the User)
When using HTTP transport, users can pass configuration through HTTP headers:
- Anilist-Token: (Optional) AniList API Token (only required for login-related operations)
If the user provides a token in the header and the server also has ANILIST_TOKEN set, the value in the header takes precedence.
Obtaining an AniList API Token (Optional)
- Go to AniList settings.
- Click "Create New Client".
- Use this URL as the client's "Redirect URL".
- Then visit https://anilist.co/api/v2/oauth/authorize?client_id={clientID}&response_type=token , replace {clientID} with the client ID you obtained. It will ask you to log in, then provide a token.
- Copy the generated token for use in the .env file or environment variables.

Local Development
This project uses pnpm as the package manager. Clone the repository and install dependencies.
Configuration (Optional)
Copy the example to create a .env file, edit the .env fileand add your AniList API token.
Debugging with MCP Inspector
You can use MCP Inspector to test and debug the AniList MCP server. Then open a browser and visit the provided URL (usually http://localhost:6274 ) to access the MCP Inspector interface. There you can:
- Connect to a running AniList MCP server
- Browse available tools
- Run tools with custom parameters
- View responses
This is especially useful when testing the configuration before connecting the setup to an MCP client such as Claude Desktop.
Docker
Pull from the GitHub Container Registry. Docker build (local development). Docker multi-platform build (local development).
MCP Bundles (MCPB)
To create an MCP Bundle for this server, run the corresponding command.
Security Notice
This MCP server accepts an AniList API token in a .env file, environment variables, or HTTP headers. Please keep the information secure and never commit it to version control.
