About this tool

Gas Travel Calculator is a fuel travel cost estimation tool from Trip Tellers, used for calculating fuel consumption and costs for road trips and multi-stop itineraries, helping users quickly understand the fuel expenses required for a trip before they travel.

Purpose

This tool is aimed at users who need to estimate the fuel cost of a self-driving trip. Whether it is a quick estimate based on approximate distance or a trip where more precise planning is desired based on the actual route and a specific vehicle, it can be used. It is suitable for single-destination trips, multi-stop road trips, and scenarios where round-trip costs need to be distinguished. It should be noted that this calculator only addresses fuel usage and fuel cost, and does not include tolls, parking, meals, lodging, or other travel expenses, so it is better suited for use as a fuel budgeting tool.

Main Capabilities

The tool offers two estimation methods: Quick Estimate and Advanced Trip Calculation.

Quick Estimate is suitable for users who already know the trip distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. After entering the values, you can switch between miles and kilometers, and the system will automatically convert the values and immediately provide fuel usage and total trip cost. The fuel price is automatically filled with the latest regular gasoline average price, and users can edit it at any time. Quick Estimate also provides a display of the cost split by number of people, defaulting to splitting between two people.

Advanced Trip Calculation is suitable for users who want more accurate results based on the actual route and vehicle. Users can enter a starting point and one or more destinations to build a multi-stop trip, and calculate the route distance, estimated driving time, fuel usage, and total cost for the entire journey. Vehicles can be selected by year, make, model, engine, and fuel type, and the calculator will use vehicle data from EPA / FuelEconomy.gov, such as city MPG, highway MPG, combined MPG, fuel tank capacity, and estimated range. For some vehicles (including plug-in hybrids and dual-fuel models), additional fuel efficiency and range information can also be displayed. Advanced calculation also supports enabling a round-trip option, automatically adding the return trip and estimating the complete cost.

The tool uses current fuel price data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), as well as vehicle data from EPA / FuelEconomy.gov. Gasoline, diesel, and propane prices come from EIA, which publishes weekly averages for the nation, regions, and nine states; electricity prices also come from EIA and are updated monthly. E85 and CNG prices come from AFDC. Vehicle fuel economy data comes from EPA, and Trip Tellers checks dailyCheck for and automatically import new or updated vehicle records.

How to Use

For a quick estimate, enter the trip distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price on the Quick Estimate tab, switching between miles or kilometers as needed, to get an instant estimate of fuel usage and total trip cost. If using miles, the calculation is: Fuel Usage = Distance ÷ MPG; Trip Cost = Fuel Usage × Price per Gallon. If using kilometers, switch to metric: Fuel Usage = Distance × L/100 km ÷ 100; Trip Cost = Fuel Usage × Price per Liter. The fuel price is automatically filled in with the latest regular gasoline average price.

For an advanced trip calculation, enter the starting point and multiple destinations on the Advanced Trip tab, select a vehicle, and calculate fuel cost, driving time, and detailed information for the entire route. The advanced calculation is also based on the basic fuel cost formula but uses actual route distance and the vehicle's combined fuel efficiency: Fuel Usage = Total Route Distance ÷ Combined MPG; Trip Cost = Fuel Usage × Fuel Price. Users can also enable the Round Trip option to include the return trip. If you want a faster estimate, you can also directly use the default provided averages.

Use Cases

This tool is suitable for the following scenarios: quickly estimating fuel cost when distance and fuel consumption are known; planning a multi-stop road trip and needing an overall fuel budget; selecting a specific vehicle to get more realistic results; needing to distinguish the total cost of a round trip; and needing a rough fuel cost comparison under mixed city and highway conditions. For long-distance driving, unfamiliar routes, or multi-stop trips, the advanced calculation is usually more informative than an estimate based only on straight-line distance because it uses actual route distance, estimated driving time between stops, specific vehicle fuel efficiency, current fuel prices, and optional round-trip calculation.

Limitations

This tool focuses on fuel usage and fuel cost and does not include tolls, parking, meals, lodging, or other travel expenses. Actual fuel costs may vary due to traffic, road conditions, weather, altitude, stop-and-go driving, local fuel prices, and vehicle performance under real conditions. The advanced calculation can improve accuracy through route and vehicle details, but normal deviations still exist. When using miles or kilometers, the calculator automatically converts the values. The tool supports multi-stop trips and multiple vehicle/fuel types (including diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric, and dual-fuel models), depending on the available vehicle data.

Data and Updates

As of the information stated, the U.S. regular gasoline average price on October 5, 2026 was $4.35 per gallon, sourced fromthe U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), with an update date of October 6, 2026. The page also displays the latest U.S. national average fuel prices, updated on October 6, 2026. Gasoline, diesel, and propane prices come from the EIA, which publishes national, regional, and nine-state averages weekly; electricity prices come from the EIA and are updated monthly; E85 and CNG prices come from the AFDC; vehicle fuel economy data comes from the EPA and is obtained through FuelEconomy.gov, and Trip Tellers checks daily and automatically imports updates.
