Purpose
geomelon-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for the Geomelon geographic API, used to expose geographic data such as cities, countries, regions, and multilingual names to any MCP-compatible AI client. Users can call these tools through an AI client to perform place-related queries and autocomplete.
Main capabilities
- Exposes tools for cities, countries, regions, and languages, as well as place data with multilingual names.
- Provides place autocomplete.
- Includes two transport methods: stdio and remote HTTP.
- Keyless demo mode: it can also start without GEOMELON_API_KEY, enabling only the search_cities_autocomplete tool, supported by the free oneshot host, with no registration required. All other tools require a RapidAPI key.
- The full toolset contains 22 tools in total; some tools internally chain multiple API calls to reduce round trips.
- Geomelon also provides a publicly hosted instance of this keyless demo, usable without npx or a local process, and it likewise exposes only search_cities_autocomplete.
- The official library list is at geomelon.dev/libraries, for reference by other integration methods.
Usage
Claude Code (HTTP)
- Create a .env file in the directory where the server will run.
- Start the server (dotenv will automatically load .env).
- Register with Claude Code using the claude mcp add command.
- Verify the connection status. Note: when using Claude Code, the server must remain running. To change the port, set PORT=your_port and update the URL in the claude mcp add command accordingly.
Claude Desktop (stdio)
Add the configuration to ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json, then save and restart Claude Desktop.
Cursor / Windsurf / Cline (stdio)
Add it to the MCP configuration of the corresponding editor.
Remote / hosted HTTP server
- Create a .env file on the server.
- Start the server.
- Use
http://your-host:3000/mcpas the URL and register with any MCP client. This HTTP transport is stateless: each request is independent, with no session management required. CORS is fully open (Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *), because this transport is also intended for browser-based remote MCP clients. GET / (or /health) returns a small JSON status object that can be used for running status checks and reports whether the instance has a key configured ("mode": "full"or"mode": "keyless-demo").
Available tools
- Oneshot prefix search (free, no API key required). For supported country/language pairs and the underlying HTTP endpoint, see geomelon.dev/free-city-autocomplete-api.
- Other tools require a RapidAPI key; these tools internally chain multiple API calls to save round trips.
Applicable scenarios
- Need to let MCP-compatible AI clients access geographic data such as cities, countries, regions, and languages.
- Need place autocomplete capability.
- Want to deploy a geographic data MCP server locally or remotely.
Limitations
- Keyless demo mode provides only one tool, search_cities_autocomplete; the other tools require a RapidAPI key.
- The public hosted instance likewise exposes only search_cities_autocomplete; to use the full 22 tools, you need to run your own instance and configure a RapidAPI key.
- The HTTP transport is stateless, and CORS is fully open.
- Details such as the parameters, return formats, call examples, pricing, and rate limits of specific tools are not yet provided in the materials.
