Purpose
mcp-redis-cloud is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server provided by the official Redis repository, used to connect the Redis Cloud API to MCP-compatible clients (such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.). Through this server, users can manage resources in their Redis Cloud account using natural language, for example:
- "Create a new Redis database on AWS"
- "What are my current subscriptions?"
- "Help me choose a suitable Redis database for an e-commerce application"
Main Capabilities
This MCP server encapsulates multiple types of operations of the Redis Cloud API, grouped by function as follows:
Account Management
- get_current_account: Get details of the current Redis Cloud account
- get_current_payment_methods: List all payment methods configured for the account
Subscription Management
- get_pro_subscriptions: List all Pro subscriptions in the account
- create_pro_subscription: Create a new Pro subscription, supporting advanced configuration options, including multi-cloud deployment, memory/persistence/module configuration, Active-Active deployment, and custom network configuration
- get_essential_subscriptions: List all Essential subscriptions (paginated)
- get_essential_subscription_by_id: Get detailed information for a specified Essential subscription
- create_essential_subscription: Create a new Essential subscription
- delete_essential_subscription: Delete an Essential subscription
Database Capabilities
- get_database_modules: List the database modules (capabilities) supported by the account, including Redis modules, database features, and performance options
Cloud Provider Management
- get_pro_plans_regions: Get the available regions for each cloud provider, including AWS regions, GCP regions, network options, and availability zones
Plans and Pricing
- get_essentials_plans: List the available Essential subscription plans (paginated), supporting AWS, GCP, and Azure, including Redis Flex options and fixed plans
Task Management
- get_tasks: List all current tasks in the account
- get_task_by_id: Get detailed information for a specified task, allowing you to track deployment status, monitor subscription changes, and view task progress
Usage
Prerequisites
A valid Redis Cloud API credential (API Key and Secret Key) is required.
Using in Claude Desktop
- Build the package: npm run build
- Open Claude Desktop settings, go to the Developer tab (developer mode must be enabled), click "Edit config", and add the configuration in claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"mcp-redis-cloud": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["--experimental-fetch", "<absolute_path_to_project_root>/dist/index.js"],
"env": {
"API_KEY": "<redis_cloud_api_key>",
"SECRET_KEY": "<redis_cloud_api_secret_key>"
}
}
}
}
- Close and restart Claude Desktop, and the server will appear in the MCP Servers section.
Using in Cursor IDE
- Open Cursor settings, go to the MCP tab, click "Add new global MCP Server", and fill in the same configuration as above in the automatically opened mcp.json.
- Restart Cursor, and the server will appear in the MCP Servers section.
Local Development
- Use nvm to switch to v22.14.0: nvm use v22.14.0
- Install dependencies: npm install
- Build the project: npm run build
- Test with MCP Inspector: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node dist/index.js --api-key=<api_key> --secret-key=<secret_key>
- After modifying the code, rebuild and restart Claude Desktop / Cursor.
Docker Deployment
- Build the image: docker build -t mcp/redis-cloud .
- Run the container: docker run -i --rm -e API_KEY=<your_redis_cloud_api_key> -e SECRET_KEY=<your_redis_cloud_api_secret_key> mcp/redis-cloud
- When integrating with Claude Desktop, configure it in claude_desktop_config.json using the docker command:
{
"mcpServers": {
"redis-cloud": {
"command": "docker",
"args": ["run", "-i", "--rm", "-e", "API_KEY=<your_redis_cloud_api_key>", "-e", "SECRET_KEY=<your_redis_cloud_api_secret_key>", "mcp/redis-cloud"]
}
}
}
- Save the configuration and restart Claude Desktop to ensure the environment variables API_KEY and SECRET_KEY are set correctly.
Use cases
- Quickly create and manage Redis Cloud databases and subscriptions using natural language
- Query account, subscription, plan, region, and task status directly in Claude Desktop or Cursor
- Redis Cloud resource management requiring multi-cloud deployment, Active-Active, or custom network configuration
- Integrate the MCP server into existing workflows using Docker
Limitations
- Requires valid Redis Cloud API credentials (API Key and Secret Key)
- Long-running operations return a task ID, which must be monitored through the task management interface
- Paginated responses require multiple calls to retrieve all data
- After modifying the code, the client must be rebuilt and restarted
- The materials do not provide specific pricing, cost, or platform compatibility details
