Infrawise MCP server is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for Claude Code, focused on Azure FinOps cost optimization. It is provided by Infrawise and is designed to enable Claude Code to directly obtain cost optimization recommendations in an Azure environment.
Purpose
The server is used to integrate Infrawise's Azure FinOps recommendations into Claude Code, helping users identify resources and configurations that can save costs.
Main capabilities
The server exposes the following tools to Claude Code:
- get_idle_resources: Identifies idle or "zombie" resources and recommends deletion or deallocation.
- get_sku_optimizations: Provides rightsizing recommendations for over-provisioned resources.
- get_general_recommendations: Provides optimization recommendations regarding purchasing models and licensing.
- get_savings_summary: Summarizes the total savings across all categories.
All tools accept an optional subscription_filter (subscription UUID) parameter, used to limit results to a specific subscription scope.
Usage
Before use, prerequisites must be met: a valid Infrawise account and at least one Azure subscription already connected (onboarding must be completed).
Installation and configuration are completed via an npx command, which opens a browser for Azure login, registers the MCP server with Claude Code, and confirms that everything is working properly. After completion, Claude Code must be restarted.
Common commands include:
- Switch account: deletes cached credentials and re-authenticates.
- Local development.
- Publish a new version: prepublishOnly automatically runs clean && build, and after publishing it must be verified.
Existing users can obtain the new version by rerunning npx @infrawise/mcp-server@latest setup, without needing to clear the configuration or re-register the MCP.
Environment variables and security
Token cache is stored in ~/.infrawise/mcp-credentials.json, written with 0600 mode (best effort on Windows). The server is a read-only server, and all calls use only GET requests.
Applicable scenarios
Suitable for teams or individuals using Claude Code who want Azure cost optimization recommendations, especially in scenarios requiring identification of idle resources, optimization of resource configuration, adjustment of purchasing models and licensing, and summarization of savings.
Limitations
A valid Infrawise account and at least one connected Azure subscription are required. The server is read-only and does not perform any modification operations. Other limitations are not provided for now.
