Finology MCP Server is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server from Finology Software, designed to provide AI agents with deterministic 2026 U.S. federal student loan repayment math. Language models often guess at federal student loan rules, while this server connects Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client directly to Finology Software's parity-verified federal repayment engine. Every number is calculated server-side according to current federal rules and returns a parityVerified flag. Formulas are not approximated in this package, nor hardcoded within the package.
Purpose
Federal repayment eligibility is not arithmetic, it is regulation, and it is also the part models most confidently get wrong. For example: Parent PLUS loans are not eligible for RAP, but when asked about the best plan for a Parent PLUS balance, models usually generate a RAP payment amount; this server returns the exclusion and the rule behind it. RAP is assessed on full AGI, has no poverty line protection, uses a 1%–10% sliding scale, subtracts $50 per qualifying dependent, and a spouse is not a dependent. Approximating with the old IDR formula yields the wrong answer. Consolidation loans that repaid PLUS loans are limited to ICR. PAYE and ICR remain open under certain conditions until no later than July 1, 2028. According to Federal Student Aid, PAYE is open to PAYE "new borrowers," provided there are no new loans or consolidations on or after July 1, 2026; ICR is open to eligible loan types. Loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2026 can only use the tiered Standard plan or RAP. SAVE has stopped new enrollment.
Main Capabilities
The server provides the following tools:
- compare_federal_student_loan_repayment_plans: Compares the borrower's balance under all plans for which they are actually eligible (Standard, tiered Standard, RAP, IBR, PAYE, and ICR), returning each plan's monthly payment, lifetime cost, projected forgiveness and forgiveness tax, as well as excluded plans and the eligibility rules that exclude them.
- compare_married_filing_jointly_vs_separately_student_loans: For married borrowers, calculates the cost of the tax filing status decision. Filing separately removes the spouse's income from income-driven repayment calculations, which often changes lifetime loan cost by tens of thousands of dollars. When both spouses hold federal loans, the spouse's own federal balance must also be passed in: under joint filing, the household payment is allocated according to each spouse's share of the combined balance (34 CFR 685.209(g)(1)(i)), and ignoring this overstates the borrower's payment. This tool deliberately answers only half the question and states so explicitly. The engine models the loan side precisely, but does not model the tax cost of filing separately—lost credits, worse tax rates, community property division—costs that are often large enough to reverse the answer. Returning only the favorable half as if it were the whole decision is exactly the kind of confident half-truth this server is designed to replace.
- estimate_rap_monthly_payment: Estimates only the RAP monthly payment in common cases. It requires the borrower's AGI and refuses to proceed without it—assuming zero would return the $10/month RAP floor, which reads like a real answer.
How to Use
Every answer ends with a next step, and finology_service_info returns it in a structured way:
- Advisor: Finology Software, $99 per advisor per month or $89 per month billed annually, with a self-serve 7-day trial, no credit card required (add a credit card after day 7 to continue the subscription). Includes client file import, saved scenarios, branded client reports, and student loan and SAI calculators on up to 2 company-owned websites.
- Developer/Operator: Instant free sandbox key (POST https://api.finology.tech/v1/keys/sandbox,每月 25 calls), then use the keyed endpoint via the X-Api-Key request header. The keyed tier is the surface that records answers: every answer is persisted together with its rule version and input hash before it is served. Production access is self-serve: Developer, $49/month, 2,000 calls; or Platform, $499/month, 100,000 calls. Documentation:https://finology.tech/developers/
- Keyed remote MCP:https://mcp.finology.tech/mcp。使用 Finology Software login (OAuth), which is how Claude connects, or send the X-Api-Key request header. Every answer is recorded with a verification link.
- Claude (web, desktop, and mobile): one-click connection. Finology Software is listed in the Claude Connectors Directory. Add the connector there and sign in with a free Finology Software login (no credit card required): 5 questions total, no daily limit. Subscribers get unlimited, and a subscriber's login also lists their own clients in the same connector (list_my_clients, run_projection_for_client, get_balance_trajectory_for_client).
The following is the manual method, for other MCP clients or local installation.
Claude Desktop—add to claude_desktop_config.json:
The local package requires no API key or account: it calls the public compute endpoint.
When to use it
Suitable for AI agent scenarios that need accurate federal student loan repayment calculations, such as financial planning, loan counseling, borrower self-service tools, and so on. Especially suitable for scenarios that need to distinguish eligibility for different repayment plans, compare the impact of tax filing status, and estimate the RAP monthly payment.
Limitations
This repository deliberately does not include: RAP/OBBB formulas, income-driven repayment math, forgiveness and tax bomb projections, plan eligibility rules, or NSLDS parsing. These run on Finology's servers. This is not only to protect the engine. Federal repayment rules change every year—poverty guidelines, tax rates, RAP/OBBB implementation guidance, court challenges. Formulas copied into an npm package become outdated within a few months and cannot be corrected in existing installations. Calling a maintained endpoint is the only form in which the tool stays truthful.
This repository includes: input schemas, HTTP calls, and error handling, passing the API's own field-level messages to the model instead of flattening them into "request failed".
These tools return numbers. They do not produce client-facing deliverables, save borrower records, parse NSLDS files, or track PSLF qualifying payments over time. For those, and for a borrower ledger that stays up to date as the rules change: finology.tech
