Purpose
Utility Grid MCP is used to let AI agents discover and call a large number of utility APIs without having to load hundreds of tools one by one into context. It compresses more than 400 upstream routes into a few "meta-tools": first browse or search the live catalog, then fetch the exact invocation spec for a route, and finally call any route generically. Routes newly added by the upstream service automatically appear in the catalog; the server itself does not hardcode the current catalog.
Main capabilities
According to the catalog description, the following categories are covered (examples, not exhaustive):
- geo: airports, postal codes, geocoding, weather
- lookups: dictionaries, Bible, country information, holidays
- math: statistics, matrices, equations, geometry
- utilities: QR codes, hashing, UUID, phone number parsing
- vision: OCR, image description, background removal
- audio: TTS, transcription, format conversion
- time: time zones, cron, day/month
- space: NASA APOD, asteroids, solar weather
- web: content extraction, robots.txt/Content-Signal checks
- registry: fleet catalog, daily highlights
- documents: PDF processing
- text: language detection, readability
- economy: exchange rates, financial calculators
- science, developer, domains, ai, fun (divination, chess, Q&A)
Usage
Provides seven compact MCP tools (the main text says six compact tools, while the tool list lists seven), including:
- list_capabilities: called with no parameters, returns the current live capability details
- search_capabilities({ query: "background removal" }): free, can find /remove-background
- get_endpoint_spec({ path: "remove-background" }): free, shows the exact input schema and price
- call_endpoint({ path: "remove-background", body: { image_url": "https://..." } }): paid, executes the x402 flow and returns the result
- list_tools: for GET https://x402.forgemesh.io/menu normal pull
- daily_402, agent_service_directory: also trigger the paid flow
call_endpoint can be used directly if the route and its input structure are known.
Quick start works with Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or any MCP client. Requires Node.js 20+. WALLET_PRIVATE_KEY is only needed for the 3 paid tools; directory discovery requires no wallet, so you can skip the environment variable block entirely and browse and plan calls for free.
Payment mechanism
No registration, no API key, no subscription. call_endpoint, daily_402, and agent_service_directory all trigger the same flow: the first request returns an HTTP 402 challenge, the MCP server signs a USDC payment authorization (EIP-3009) on Base and retries, the result is returned in the same response, and settlement details are under _payment when available.
The server refuses to sign for payees other than the two Utility Grid wallets, for networks other than Base mainnet, or for assets other than USDC, and also refuses amounts above the caps ($0.05 per call, $10 per session). The environment variables X402_MAX_PRICE_USD and X402_SESSION_BUDGET_USD can only lower these caps. Requests are same-origin, have a 60-second timeout, a maximum of 2 MB, and do not follow redirects.
Use cases
- Agents that need visual processing such as OCR, image description, and background removal
- Audio tasks that need TTS, transcription, and audio format conversion
- Web tasks that need web content extraction and robots.txt/Content-Signal checks
- Computation such as math, statistics, matrices, and geometry
- Lookups such as geocoding, weather, time zones, and exchange rates
- PDF processing, text language detection, and readability assessment
Limitations
- Paid tools require WALLET_PRIVATE_KEY, and you should use a Base wallet dedicated to this purpose, with a low balance and funded with USDC
- The cap is $0.05 per call and $10 per session, and can only be lowered via environment variables
- Requests are same-origin, have a 60-second timeout, a maximum of 2 MB, and do not follow redirects
- Tool results are wrapped as { source, untrusted, content }, where content is remote data and must not be treated as instructions
- The free response returned by list_tools may include a disclosed Lulu Ads card attached server-side by ForgeMesh, as a labeled pure-data field; paid tools do not carry the card, and it can be removed with delete result.sponsored. This package does not include advertising credentials and does not call any ad network
- Directory search is free, and the USD prices of paid tools are subject to x402 real-time pricing; this material does not provide a detailed per-route unit price breakdown
- No configuration information other than the environment variables above is provided
