About this tool

Purpose

This is a free online asphalt calculator for estimating quantities and costs for paving projects such as roads, driveways, and parking lots. After users enter the area, compacted thickness, density, and waste percentage, they can quickly obtain the amount of asphalt to order, volume, and weight for project planning reference.

Main Capabilities

  • Calculate area, volume (cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic meters), U.S. tons, and metric tons.
  • Support U.S. and metric units, including feet, inches, yards, meters, and centimeters.
  • Calculate the base quantity and the order quantity including waste allowance; waste is estimated at 5% by default.
  • You can enter the current local quote to get a material cost estimate; if left blank, no price estimate is performed.
  • Results update in real time as inputs change.
  • Provide multiple specialized calculators: asphalt driveway calculator, asphalt tonnage calculator, asphalt cost calculator, asphalt millings calculator, asphalt weight calculator, and parking lot asphalt calculator.

How to Use

  1. Measure the paving area, calculate the area for each rectangular section by multiplying length by width, or directly enter an already measured area in square feet, square yards, or square meters; avoid overlap when adding multiple areas together.
  2. Enter the compacted thickness after completion.
  3. Enter the density; by default, use 145 lb/ft³ (about 2,323 kg/m³) as a planning value for hot-mix asphalt.
  4. After calculating the base quantity, then apply a separate order allowance (a common planning range is 5%–10%).
  5. If a cost estimate is needed, enter the current local price per U.S. ton; you can also use the cost calculator to add costs such as labor, base preparation, transportation, equipment, and removal.

Calculation Principle

Volume equals area multiplied by compacted thickness, and the result is converted to cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters. Weight equals compacted volume multiplied by material density, then pounds are converted to U.S. tons and kilograms to metric tons. 1 U.S. short ton equals 2,000 pounds (907.18474 kilograms), and 1 metric ton equals 1,000 kilograms (2,204.62 pounds).

Applicable Scenarios

Suitable for preliminary planning of material quantities and costs for asphalt paving projects such as driveways, parking lots, and roads. The specialized tools are suitable for projects with different intentions, such as the number of truckloads required for a driveway, a complete cost breakdown, recycled millings density, or multiple parking lot zones.

Limitations

  • The default density of 145 lb/ft³ is a planning value, not a universal mix density. Actual density is affected by the mix, aggregate, binder content, air voids, and degree of compaction, and priority should be given to the density provided by the mix design, specifications, supplier, or representative testing.
  • Thickness should describe the compacted layer after completion. A loose spread layer has a larger volume before rolling, and mixing loose thickness with compacted density will overestimate the completed paving quantity.
  • Quantities are only planning estimates, and the mix density, compacted thickness, load quantity, and minimum order quantity need to be verified locally.
  • Material prices vary with mix, location, quantity, mixing plant, haul distance, season, and tonnage unit, so a dated local quote should be used.
  • A 5%–10% waste allowance is common, but the specific value depends on geometry, on-site losses, supplier minimum order quantity, and contractor practices, and it should be added only once.
  • The description does not provide specific fees, prices, supported platforms, or more detailed usage steps.
