Godot MCP Pro is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for AI-assisted Godot 4 game development, used to connect AI assistants such as Claude directly to the Godot editor. Its public repository contains only the free Godot plugin (addon), while the MCP server (Node.js) required to connect AI assistants is part of a paid package, distributed as a one-time purchase with lifetime updates.
Purpose and Positioning The tool is designed to enable AI assistants to operate the Godot editor in real time, covering the complete development workflow from scene setup and script writing to runtime debugging. It provides instant feedback through a WebSocket connection without file polling, and fully integrates with Godot's editor API, UndoRedo system, and scene tree.
Main Capabilities Official materials list 187 tools (the title also mentions 162 MCP tools), covering the following categories: project tools (10), scene tools (10), node tools (17), script tools (9), editor tools (15), input tools (5), input mapping tools (2), runtime tools (20), animation tools (6), TileMap tools (6), theme and UI tools (8), profiling tools (2), batch and refactoring tools (7), shader tools (6), export tools (4), resource tools (4), physics tools (6), 3D scene tools (7), particle tools (5), navigation tools (5), audio tools (6), AnimationTree tools (9), analysis and search tools (6), testing and QA tools (6), headless tools (3), Android tools (3). It also features UndoRedo integration (all node/property operations support Ctrl+Z), smart type parsing (e.g., automatic conversion of "Vector2(100, 200)", "#ff0000", "Color(1,0,0)"), automatic reconnection (exponential backoff 1s→2s→4s… up to 60s), heartbeat keep-alive (10-second ping/pong), and error responses with suggestions.
How to Use
- Install the Godot plugin: copy the addons/godot_mcp/ folder into the addons/ directory of the Godot project, then enable Godot MCP Pro in Project → Project Settings → Plugins.
- Install the MCP server: the server/ directory is only included in the full paid package; after downloading and extracting, run the corresponding command.
- Configure Claude Code: add the configuration to .mcp.json.
- Choose a mode: four modes are provided to accommodate the tool count limits of different clients. --3d includes the core tools as well as physics, AnimationTree, and navigation, but omits uid_to_project_path, project_path_to_uid, compare_screenshots, clear_output, close_script, reload_open_scripts, set_anchor_preset, and click_button_by_text, to stay within the 100-tool limit; replace --lite with --minimal for the smallest footprint. Lite includes project, scene, node, script, editor, input, runtime, and input_map tools; Minimal includes 35 basic tools—project information, scene management, node CRUD, script editing, editor errors, input simulation, and runtime inspection.
- CLI mode (an alternative to MCP): suitable for clients that do not support MCP, or scenarios where zero context overhead is desired; the CLI can be used directly from a terminal/bash tool. The CLI requires the server to be built first (step 2) and connects directly to the Godot editor plugin via WebSocket; requirements: the Godot editor is running with the MCP plugin enabled, the server has been built (node build/setup.js install), and an available port in the range 6510-6514. Its advantage is that an LLM can discover capabilities incrementally via --help, rather than preloading all tool definitions, making it suitable for any LLM client with terminal access, unrestricted by tool count limits.
- Client compatibility: open a Godot project with the plugin enabled, then use Claude Code to interact with the editor.
Use cases Suitable for developers using Godot 4 for game development who want to use an AI assistant to complete tasks such as scene editing, script writing, animation, TileMap, shaders, input simulation, runtime analysis, navigation, and testing.
Limitationsand notes The public repository only contains the free Godot plugin; the MCP server must be obtained through a paid package (one-time purchase, about $15, including lifetime updates). Purchase channels include Buy Me a Coffee and itch.io. If there is no server/ folder after cloning the repository, this is normal. The software is proprietary; specific license terms are in the LICENSE. CLI mode requires the Godot editor to be running, the server to be built, and a port to be available.
