Use Cases
crypto-trending-mcp is an MCP server used to track and monitor the latest trending tokens on CoinGecko, providing real-time insights into the most popular cryptocurrencies.
Key Capabilities
The server provides one tool and one prompt:
- Tool: get_trending_md_doc — returns the Markdown document of the complete CoinGecko trending page, which contains a table of trending cryptocurrencies with columns including: Rank, Name, Symbol, Price, 1h Change, 24h Change, 7d Change, 24h Volume, Market Cap.
- Prompt: parse_trending_md_doc — guides the MCP client to extract the trending coin table from the Markdown document and parse it using an LLM, supporting analyses such as identifying coins with rising prices or sorting by market cap.
In addition, the project supports seamless integration and is designed for use with Claude Desktop, allowing analysis of trending crypto data through natural language queries via MCP tools and prompts. The project is lightweight and extensible, built with minimal dependencies and a simple architecture, making it easy to extend or deploy.
Usage
Requirements: Node.js (for Playwright browser dependencies); Claude Desktop (optional, for testing via an MCP client).
Installation Steps
-
Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/kukapay/crypto-trending-mcp.git cd crypto-trending-mcp
-
Install dependencies using uv: uv sync playwright install
Integration with Claude Desktop
- Configure Claude Desktop: edit the configuration file:
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
- Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
Add the server configuration: { "mcpServers": { "crypto-trending": { "command": "uv", "args": [ "--directory", "/absolute/path/to/crypto-trending-mcp", "run", "main.py" ] } } } Replace /absolute/path/to/crypto-trending-mcp with the absolute path to your main.py.
-
Restart Claude Desktop: close and reopen Claude Desktop. Look for the hammer icon (🔨) in the input box, indicating that MCP tools are available.
-
Interact with the server: ask natural language questions, for example:
- "What are the trending cryptocurrencies with positive 24h price changes?"
- "Show the top 3 trending coins by market cap."
Claude will use the get_trending_md_doc tool and the parse_trending_md_doc prompt to retrieve and analyze the data.
The get_trending_md_doc tool returns a Markdown-like document; the parse_trending_md_doc prompt guides the LLM to extract the table and generatestructured output.
Applicable Scenarios
Suitable for analyzing CoinGecko trending cryptocurrency data through natural language queries via Claude Desktop, such as filtering trending coins with a 24-hour price increase, viewing trending coins sorted by market cap, etc.
Limitations
The project requires Node.js for Playwright browser dependencies; Claude Desktop is optional, for MCP client testing. Other information regarding fees, pricing, platforms, performance, etc., is not currently provided.
