About this tool

Blockchain MCP is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server powered by Tatum, designed to enable LLM clients to query blockchain data across more than 130 blockchain networks. It exposes Tatum's blockchain data API and RPC gateway, making it convenient for AI assistants to retrieve on-chain information.

Purpose

The tool is mainly used to provide blockchain data access capabilities for LLM clients (such as Cursor, Claude Desktop, VS Code, etc.). Through the MCP protocol, users can use natural language prompts to query blockchain data, such as retrieving exchange rates, wallet balance history, the latest block number, and more.

Main Capabilities

  • Supports 130+ blockchain networks: including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Avalanche, and many other networks.
  • Blockchain Data API: provides data queries for blocks, transactions, balances, network information, and more.
  • RPC Gateway: direct access to blockchain RPC endpoints.
  • 13 available tools: of which 10 are used for blockchain data queries and 3 are used for RPC gateway operations.

Usage

  1. Environment requirements: Requires Node.js 18+ and a Tatum API key (TATUM_API_KEY).
  2. Get an API key: Create one for free in the Tatum dashboard (dashboard.tatum.io).
  3. Installation: Can be installed globally or used directly via the published binaries (blockchain-mcp and blockchain-mcp-server, both with the same entry point).
  4. MCP client configuration: Add the server to the configuration of an MCP client (such as Cursor, Claude Desktop, VS Code, etc.). Be careful not to commit the API key; only use environment variables in the client configuration.
  5. Usage examples: After connecting, you can ask the assistant to use MCP tools, for example:
    • "What is the BTC/USD exchange rate?" → calls get_exchange_rate, with parameters symbol: BTC, basePair: USD
    • "Show Vitalik’s native ETH balance history" → calls get_wallet_portfolio / get_transaction_history on ethereum-mainnet
    • "What is the latest Ethereum block number?" → calls gateway_execute_rpc, with parameter eth_blockNumber
  6. Chain identifiers: Use Tatum gateway names (such as ethereum-mainnet, bitcoin-mainnet). You can call gateway_get_supported_chains to get a real-time list.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Developers or AI assistants need to quickly query data from multiple blockchain networks.
  • Integrate blockchain data query capabilities into LLM clients for analysis, monitoring, or interaction.
  • Scenarios that require direct access to blockchain RPC endpoints.

Limitations

  • Requires a Tatum API key, and the key must be kept secure.
  • Requires a Node.js 18+ environment.
  • For the specific supported chains and RPC coverage, please refer to gateway_get_supported_chains or the official documentation.
