Aviation MCP Server (aviation-mcp) is an MCP server used to provide real-time aviation data to AI agents. After connecting this MCP server to Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, Cline, Continue, or Windsurf, the assistant can retrieve real METAR weather, airport information, aircraft specifications, aviation glossaries, and FAA-style practice questions on demand.
Purpose For AI assistant scenarios that need aviation data, allowing the model to pull real-time weather and aviation reference information on demand for flight-related Q&A, learning, and quizzes.
Main capabilities
- Decoded METAR weather: query the current weather at a specified airport, for example "What is the current weather at KJFK, and is it VFR?"
- Query airport information by ICAO code
- Aircraft specifications: query and compare aircraft model parameters, for example the cruise speed and range of the Cessna 172 and Piper Warrior
- Aviation glossary: query the meaning of terms, for example "What does transponder code 7700 mean?"
- FAA-style practice questions: generate practice questions and conduct quizzes, for example "Give me 3 FAA meteorology practice questions and quiz me"
- Daily pilot quiz
How to use Two operating modes are provided:
Mode A — Run it yourself (free, no key required) Pull the package via npx and start the server via stdio. No registration, no token, and the data comes from the free Rotate Pilot API.
Mode B — Hosted (zero configuration, pay per use) If you need a hosted endpoint with no installation and always online, you can use the Apify hosted version. You need to obtain a free Apify token at console.apify.com/account/integrations. Legacy SSE clients can use /sse instead of /mcp. Hosted calls are billed per tool call.
Pay per use: a small fee is charged for each tool call (no subscription, no minimum spend), and you pay only for the data the agent actually pulls.
Data and attribution All data comes from the free Rotate Pilot aviation API (docs · OpenAPI spec), built by a commercial pilot. Weather is real-time data; airport, aircraft, and glossary data are curated reference data.
Applicable scenarios
- Aviation learning and exam preparation: generate FAA-style practicequestions, conduct daily pilot quizzes, and query the glossary.
- Pre-flight information queries: obtain real-time METAR weather for a specified airport and determine VFR conditions.
- Aircraft model comparison: query and compare specifications such as cruise speed and range for different aircraft models.
- Use with AI clients that support MCP (Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, Cline, Continue, Windsurf).
Limitations
- The official materials do not provide details such as specific fee amounts, call quotas, or data update frequency.
- The hosted version requires an Apify token and is billed per tool call; the self-run version is free and requires no key.
- Weather is real-time data, while airports, aircraft, and the glossary are curated reference data.
