About this tool

Purpose

japan-seasons-mcp provides AI assistants with real-time data on seasonal travel in Japan, solving the problem of AI giving inaccurate cherry blossom and autumn leaf dates based on outdated training data. By connecting to real-time forecast data from the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC), it enables MCP clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini to provide accurate information on cherry blossom blooming, autumn leaf color changes, flower viewing, fruit picking, and festival events.

Main Capabilities

  • Real-time data: Connects to forecast and observation data from the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC), with data updated daily. The blooming status dashboard is updated daily at 9:00 JST, and location observations are updated after being submitted by JMC reporters.
  • 1,700+ locations: Covers 12 seasonal categories, including 1,012 cherry blossom locations, 687 autumn leaf locations, 346 fruit farms, 90 flower locations, and 46 major festival events. All locations include GPS coordinates.
  • 17 tools: Including japan_seasonal_answer (general Q&A), sakura_now (current cherry blossom status), koyo_now (current autumn leaf status), sakura_forecast (cherry blossom forecasts for 48 cities), sakura_spots (specific cherry blossom locations), sakura_best_dates (travel date matching), kawazu_forecast (Kawazu cherry blossom forecast), koyo_forecast (autumn leaf forecast), koyo_best_dates (autumn leaf date matching), koyo_spots (autumn leaf locations), flowers_spots (flower locations), festivals_list (festival list), fruit_seasons (fruit seasons), fruit_farms (fruit farms), weather_forecast (3-day weather forecast), etc.
  • Multiple data sources: Simultaneously provides crawlable text summaries, JSON APIs, and interactive maps, making it easy for AI to search and cite.

How to Use

Remote MCP endpoint (recommended): Add the following URL as an MCP server/app/connector: https://seasons.kooexperience.com/mcp

For ChatGPT Apps/Connectors:

  • Name: Japan in Seasons
  • Description: Use this for live Japan seasonal travel data: cherry blossom and sakura dates, autumn leaves, flowers, festivals, fruit picking, and weather. Best for current or date-specific Japan travel questions.
  • Connector URL: https://seasons.kooexperience.com/mcp

Local MCP client (Claude Desktop / Claude Code / stdio MCP): Add the server to the client's MCP configuration.

Crawlable data sources (for AI search):

  • Cherry blossom text summary:https://seasons.kooexperience.com/sakura-forecast.txt
  • Cherry blossom forecast JSON:https://seasons.kooexperience.com/api/sakura/forecast
  • Interactive map and forecast page:https://seasons.kooexperience.com

Optional connection preferences:

  • dateStyle — friendly or iso
  • temperatureUnit — celsius or fahrenheit
  • includeCoordinates — true or false
  • mapLanguage — english or japanese

Optional persistent cache: Point JAPAN_SEASONS_CACHE_DIR to a persistent volume (for example, a Railway Volume mounted at /data) to store the prewarmed nationwide all-locations JSON for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves across restarts. Without this setting, it falls back to an in-memory cache and still works normally.

Typical workflow:

  1. First use sakura_best_dates, koyo_best_dates, sakura_forecast, or koyo_forecast to determine the timing.
  2. Then use sakura_spots, koyo_spots, fruit_farms, flowers_spots, or festivals_list to dig into specific parks, temples, farms, or events.
  3. If rain or temperature may affect the recommendation, check weather_forecast.

Use cases

  • The user asks "When is the best time to see cherry blossoms in Kyoto?"
  • The user asks "What is there to do in Japan in June?"
  • The user asks "Where can I see autumn leaves in late November?"
  • The user asks "Which seasonal events match my travel dates?"
  • The user wants to know the cherry blossom bloom percentage and status at a specific park
  • The user wants to find fruit-picking farms or festival events

Limitations

  • Bloom forecasts have natural variability, and actual bloom dates may be 2-3 weeks earlier or later due to temperature changes.
  • Observation data is updated only when a JMC reporter submits it; observation data older than 48 hours is shown as context rather than hidden.
  • The forecast model freezes at 100% after full bloom and cannot detect petal fall or leaf cherry status on its own; it relies on location observations (status 5-6) to confirm the post-full-bloom state.
  • The prime viewing period is usually full bloom ± 3 days, and rain accelerates petal fall.
  • MCP tools are available only after the user or workspace administrator connects the server in an MCP-capable client; discovering this repository through web search does not automatically grant the assistant permission to run MCP tools.
  • ChatGPT Search can discover this project as a web result, but web discovery is different from connecting to the MCP server. If chat has only web search enabled, it should cite the crawlable forecast pages or JSON API. To run tools such as sakura_now, sakura_forecast, or sakura_spots, the MCP endpoint must first be added as a ChatGPT app/connector or configured in another MCP client.

Technical details

  • Developed with TypeScript
  • No external database required
  • No authentication required
  • Static datasets are loaded at startup and served from memory, with no disk I/O per request
  • Live JMC data is cached server-side (1-6 hour TTL)
  • All-locations data is precompressed to gzip at startup, making repeated serving nearly cost-free

Other information

  • The interactive map seasons.kooexperience.com displays all the same data, including 1,012 cherry blossom locations (with lifecycle colors: orange buds, pink full bloom, green end), 687 autumn leaf locations, 346 fruit farms (grouped by location), and 90 flower locations.
  • The map includes a "Plan My Trip" mode, which lets you select a city and view all nearby seasonal activities (sorted by distance), as well as a "Near Me" button to find locations within 30 km of your GPS position.
  • PRs are welcome, especially flower locations, festival entries, and farm corrections. See CONTRIBUTING.md.
