Karea MCP is an MCP server for Karea task management, with the goal of letting Claude Code, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible clients directly manage development tasks while writing code. The repository title mentions 44 tools, while the body text states that there are currently 9 tools covering 70 operations; this metadata is regenerated by scripts/sync-metadata.mjs.
Purpose It connects task management actions to AI coding clients, so developers can create, edit, close, review, and link development tasks without leaving the editor, and record design ideas, investigation notes, open questions, and related resources around tasks.
Main capabilities
- Tasks and subtasks: create, edit, close, and delete tasks and subtasks; support batch editing and batch closing; record completed or in-progress work; manage the checklist required before a task can be closed (closing requisites).
- Notes and documents: add or edit notes and sticky notes for tasks; read and write long-form Markdown documents for tasks; write a task's AI Context (private memory across sessions). Edits overwrite the replaced content.
- Open questions: track open questions by task, and answer or edit them later.
- Resources: create, upload, and update resources in the file/document library, and attach them to tasks; support file references and links.
- Jira links: link tasks to Jira issues, and support reverse linking and unlinking.
- Productivity recap: get an activity recap by date range.
- Projects and categories: create projects, create categories within projects, and share projects with others via email.
- Meetings and reminders: create and edit meetings, add tasks or questions to a meeting agenda; create, postpone, ignore, or complete reminders.
- AI assistant: send natural language requests to the Karea AI assistant; the assistant may read or modify tasks to carry out the request.
- Deletion and unlinking: delete projects, categories, tasks, checklist items, notes, sticky notes, questions, resources, and meetings; unlink resources, tasks, questions, Jira issues, or AI sessions. Some permanent deletions require confirm=true.
Usage In Claude Code, it can be added to ~/.claude.json, or run claude mcp add; the API key is obtained at https://karea.app/dashboard/settings?section=api-keys . In Cursor, it can be added to the project's .cursor/mcp.json, or the global ~/.cursor/mcp.json.
Tools use the action + params calling form: actions are not independent tools, for example karea_list_notes is called through karea_read with the parameters { "action": "karea_list_notes", "params": { ... } }; the karea_ prefix of the action can be omitted. Setting the environment variable KAREA_MCP_LEGACY_TOOLS=1 restores the old mode in which all 70 actions are registered as independent tools.
The 9 tools and the actions they cover:
- karea_read: read-only access to projects, tasks, subtasks, notes, sticky notes, task documents and AI context, open questions, resources, meetings, reminders, Jira links, AI sessions, and activity recaps; it is the main entry point. Includes karea_list_projects, karea_list_tasks, karea_view_task, karea_view_tasks, karea_task_changes, karea_list_subtasks, karea_list_notes, karea_list_sticky_notes, karea_get_markdown, karea_get_context, karea_list_questions, karea_list_resources, karea_get_resource, karea_list_meetings, karea_view_meeting, karea_check_reminders, karea_get_jira_link, karea_list_sessions, karea_recap.
- karea_tasks_write: create and change tasks, including karea_create_task, karea_quick_task, karea_doing, karea_edit_task, karea_edit_tasks, karea_close_task, karea_done, karea_create_subtask, karea_add_requisite, karea_toggle_requisite.
- karea_notes_write: writes notes, including karea_add_note, karea_edit_note, karea_create_sticky_note, karea_edit_sticky_note, karea_set_markdown, karea_set_context.
- karea_projects_write: includes karea_create_project, karea_create_category, karea_share_project.
- karea_meetings_write: includes karea_create_meeting, karea_edit_meeting, karea_link_task_to_meeting, karea_link_question_to_meeting, karea_create_question, karea_answer_question, karea_edit_question, karea_create_reminder, karea_snooze_reminder, karea_dismiss_reminder, karea_mark_reminder_done.
- karea_resources_write: includes karea_create_resource, karea_upload_resource, karea_update_resource, karea_link_resource_to_task, karea_link_jira, karea_link_session.
- karea_assistant: includes karea_ask, sends natural language requests to the Karea AI assistant.
- karea_delete: includes karea_delete_project, karea_delete_category, karea_delete_task, karea_delete_requisite, karea_delete_note, karea_delete_sticky_note, karea_delete_question, karea_delete_resource, karea_delete_meeting, karea_unlink_resource_from_task, karea_unlink_task_from_meeting, karea_unlink_question_from_meeting, karea_unlink_jira, karea_unlink_session.
- karea_help: provides the complete parameter schema for any action.
List-type actions require at least one filter condition; a single call cannot export all data. When a filter condition is missing, the call will be rejected and the acceptable filter conditions will be listed, so the agent can retry immediately. karea_list_projects does not require a filter condition (the agent uses it to find the projectId), and neither do pending reminders in karea_check_reminders.
Use cases Suitable for users doing development work in MCP clients such as Claude Code and Cursor, for synchronously managing tasks during coding, recording design ideas and investigation notes, tracking unresolved issues, linking Jira and resources, and generating productivity reviews.
Limitations Requires a Karea account and API key; the MCP server must be configured in the client before use. List actions must provide filter conditions. Some permanent deletions require confirm=true. Editing notes, Markdown, or AI Context will overwrite the replaced content. The repository uses the MIT license; see LICENSE for details.
