Copilot MCP is a VS Code extension positioned as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) client, used to establish integration between AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot Chat, Claude Code, and Codex CLI and MCP servers. It lets users discover, install, and manage open-source MCP servers and Agent Skills in one unified place.
Main capabilities
- MCP server management: Connect and manage multiple MCP servers through an intuitive UI.
- Skill search and installation: Discover skills from skills.sh and install them into your agent.
- Installed skill management: View installed skills and control uninstallation at the agent level.
- Claude/Codex/Copilot integration: Expose MCP tools directly to these agents for use.
- Server discovery: Automatically discover open-source servers.
- Remote MCP support (optional): If you do not want to run servers locally, you can use Cloud MCP (remote, OAuth only). Paste the MCP URL into Copilot/Claude, with no keys and no terminal.
How to use
- Install the extension from the VS Code Marketplace.
- Open the MCP Servers view in the activity bar, or configure it in settings.
- Connect to or search for servers.
- Switch to the Skills tab, search for and install skills, and manage installed skills.
- Use the newly added tools and skills in Copilot Chat. Tip: When a server supports npx / uvx, the Server Discovery panel shows a "Deploy via Cloud MCP" option, allowing it to run remotely without installing anything.
Use cases
- Users who want to provide standardized MCP tools for GitHub Copilot Chat.
- Developers who need local or remote (Cloud MCP) workflows.
- Users who want to join an interoperable ecosystem.
Privacy and telemetry The extension collects a small number of anonymous usage events (searches, installation attempts, clicks on in-extension links/CTAs) to understand which features are useful. The collected content includes: anonymous event names and a small number of properties (searches in the extension sidebar and @search terms entered in mcp chat prompts, truncated to 100 characters; names/URLs of public GitHub repositories you search for or interact with and skill source locators; operating system platform/architecture and extension version; error messages/diagnostic information on failure, truncated). It never collects: file contents, workspace or repository contents, account identifiers (no email, username, or token) - account-related properties are stripped before sending. The extension respects VS Code's telemetry.telemetryLevel setting; if telemetry is disabled in VS Code, the extension will not send anything. To opt out, set telemetry.telemetryLevel to off in VS Code settings.
Maintainer notes This repository includes an upstream Copilot provider from anomalyco/opencode under vendor/opencode-copilot/src/**. A daily sync PR can be automatically created via .github/workflows/sync-opencode-copilot.yml. PRs and feature requests are welcome.
