About this tool

Purpose

inkra-mcp is the official Model Context Protocol (MCP) bridge server for Inkra, used to drive the macOS native Markdown editor Inkra from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client. It is itself a stdio→HTTP bridge: the Inkra app is responsible for document state, the undo stack, syntax highlighting, and rendering, while the bridge forwards JSON-RPC over stdio to Inkra's local HTTP MCP endpoint.

Main capabilities

This MCP server exposes 18 tools, covering categories such as document editing, outline navigation, folder browsing, bookmarks, and view modes. All tools act on the document currently open in the Inkra app, so what the AI agent sees is exactly what the user sees: edits are displayed in real time with syntax highlighting and preview, and undo/redo uses the app's normal undo stack. Example usages include: asking Claude to open a certain Markdown file, find a heading containing specific text, add a checkbox after it, and save; asking Cursor to list all files in the current folder, bookmark a certain second-level heading, and switch to focus mode.

How to use

Prerequisites: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later; the Inkra app installed and running (free during the testing period, available via the Mac App Store and direct download); if building from source, Swift 5.9+ (Xcode 15+) is required.

Installation and configuration: you can build from source or use a prebuilt binary. You need to obtain the INKRA_TOKEN from Inkra's "Settings → API & Integrations". Configuration in Cursor or other MCP clients is the same—a stdio MCP server, requiring two environment variables to be set.

Suitable scenarios

Suitable for users who use Inkra for Markdown writing and document management on macOS and want to directly operate the current document through AI clients such as Claude and Cursor, for example batch-finding and modifying headings, managing bookmarks, switching view modes, browsing folders, and so on.

Limitations

The Inkra app must be installed and running; this repository is only the bridge; the Inkra app is commercial software, while the bridge is open source (MIT). The specific tool list, environment variable names, and other details are not listed one by one in the materials and are not provided for now.
