About this tool

Purpose

polymarket-news-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server used to map real-world news headlines to the Polymarket prediction markets that may be affected by them. Many MCP servers can query Polymarket prices, but this server focuses on a different question: "This just happened—where can the global beliefs about it be read?" It is aimed at AI agents that need to associate news events with prediction markets, outputting live odds, deep links, and explainable match results.

Main capabilities

  • News and market matching: Provides tools (such as match_news("Federal Reserve signals rate hike as inflation stays hot")) that let an AI agent input a news headline and return Polymarket markets that may be driven by that news.
  • Explainable matching: Matches are deterministic and explainable; each match reports the specific terms that triggered the match and a confidence score, so agents can judge for themselves whether the match is reasonable.
  • Live odds and deep links: Provides live market odds and links.
  • Read-only by default: Read-only by default, with no API key, wallet, or custody required; market data comes from Polymarket's public Gamma API (roughly the top 2,000 markets by liquidity, cached for 15 minutes; the cache is located in ~/.cache/polymarket-news-mcp/).
  • Optional trading tools (v0.2.0+, must be actively enabled): Read-only by default; trading tools appear only after installing the [trading] extra dependency and providing your own signing key:trading_status、place_limit_order、place_market_buy、my_open_orders、cancel_order、my_positions. Each order is subject to a spending cap.

Matching mechanism

Matching is based on IDF-weighted term overlap, computed between the user text and market questions/event titles, combined with: phrase (bigram) agreement, number normalization ($120,000 ≡ 120k), accent folding, salience gating (each match must have at least one rare and informative anchor, such as "openai" rather than "the"), deduplication that keeps only one best market per event, and relative truncation. A match score ≥15 is high confidence; 10–15 is a related-entity match.

How to use

Requires Python ≥3.10. Use uv (no installation required):

uvx polymarket-news-mcp

Claude Desktop / any MCP client (claude_desktop_config.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "polymarket-news": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["polymarket-news-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Or use classic pip:pip install polymarket-news-mcp, then run the command polymarket-news-mcp.

After the first cold start, a call takes about 10–15 seconds to build the index; subsequent calls complete instantly.

Trading (opt-in required, v0.2.0+)

By default this server is read-only. Trading tools appear only after you provide your own signing key and install the extra dependencies.

Transparency and builder attribution: Orders placed through this server carry the newsbet builder code (0 bps maker/taker—you pay no extra fees); Polymarket's Builders program attributes routed trading volume to this project. Forks can override this via POLYMARKET_BUILDER_CODE .

Security: Your key never leaves your machine and is never logged. Please use a dedicated trading wallet with limited funds. Market SELL (market sell) is intentionally not offered (upstream semantics are unclear)—please sell via limit orders.

Known upstream issue (July 2026): Polymarket's py-clob-client-v2 currently cannot sign for new "deposit wallet" accounts (#52, #70, #76). Accounts created via the Polymarket website using a browser wallet (signature types 0/1/2) work normally—please use POLYMARKET_FUNDER Set to your Polymarket profile address.

Jurisdiction: Polymarket's CLOB rejects orders from restricted regions (including the United States) on the server side; using these tools in prohibited regions is at your own risk. Nothing here constitutes financial advice.

Use Cases

Suitable for AI agent workflows that need to connect news events with prediction markets, such as monitoring news, determining which prediction markets may be affected, and providing real-time odds and links for research or informational display.

Limitations

  • Read-only by default; trading functionality must be actively enabled and is at your own risk.
  • Provides information only and does not constitute financial advice.
  • Polymarket's availability depends on your jurisdiction.
  • Known upstream issue: py-clob-client-v2 currently cannot sign for new "deposit wallet" accounts.
  • News sources: CoinDesk, Cointelegraph, Decrypt, The Block, SEC, BBC World & Politics, ESPN (RSS); PRs to add more sources are welcome.
