Adaptive Cards MCP is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server designed to help AI assistants generate valid and accessible Adaptive Cards for Teams, Outlook, Copilot, and other Microsoft interfaces. The project provides 9 tools, 3 guided workflows, and 924 tests.
Purpose The server enables AI assistants to generate, validate, optimize, and transform Adaptive Cards in natural language, with compatibility handling for different host platforms. It is suitable for scenarios that require quickly producing production-grade card JSON, such as approval processes, notifications and reminders, data reports, form input, profiles and status displays, etc.
Main capabilities
- 9 tools: covering card generation, validation, optimization, transformation, and other operations.
- 3 guided workflows (MCP Prompts): including generate -> validate -> optimize -> host configuration, converting data into cards, reviewing existing cards, etc.
- 5 MCP Resources and 2 templates.
- Host compatibility: supports Teams, Outlook, Copilot, ChatGPT, etc., and automatically downgrades card versions for Outlook (v1.4) and Webex (v1.3).
- Accessibility support: starting from v2.3.0, all generated cards automatically include the speak property, and the accessibility score can reach 100/100.
- Output format: the card generation tool returns two clear blocks - copyable card JSON and a metadata summary.
- Test coverage: 924 tests, including 28 tool tests and 10 prompt tests, with quality gates (accessibility score, element count).
How to use No installation required; npx will automatically download and run it.
- Add to an AI assistant:
- VS Code: add to .vscode/mcp.json
- Cursor: add to .cursor/mcp.json
- Windsurf: add to ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json
- Copilot Studio: open Copilot Studio -> your agent -> Tools -> Add a tool -> New tool -> Model Context Protocol, enter the MCP server URL (for example https://your-server.azurewebsites.net/sse),选择要暴露的工具。
- ChatGPT: Enable Developer mode in settings, go to Settings → Connectors → Create, and enter the MCP server HTTPS URL.
- Getting started: Describe your requirements to the AI assistant in natural language; the AI will select the appropriate tools, generate valid cards, validate them, and return production-grade JSON that can be pasted directly into the Adaptive Cards Designer for preview.
- Slash commands (MCP prompts): Used for guided multi-step workflows, for example:
- Generate → Validate → Optimize → Host configuration
- Convert data to cards: Analyze data → Select the best layout → Validate output
- Review existing cards: Validate schema + accessibility → Automatically fix issues → Generate a summary report
- npm library (programmatic use): You can install the package and use it in your own code (bots, APIs, CI pipelines); see the Library API reference for details.
Use cases
- Approvals and workflows
- Notifications and alerts
- Data and reports
- Forms and input
- Profiles and status
- Cross-host and version management
- Validation and optimization
Limitations and notes
- When used via MCP (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor), the host LLM provides the intelligence, and no API key is required. An API key only needs to be set for standalone/library use.
- Telemetry is disabled by default and requires opt-in. When enabled, it collects anonymous usage metrics and sends aggregated data to PostHog. The data sent includes tool names, call counts, duration, error rates, platform (OS), Node version, package version, and transport type; card content, user prompts, data payloads, IP addresses, file paths, and environment variables are never sent. A random session ID is generated on each server start, and no persistent identifiers are stored. This can be controlled by setting MCP_TELEMETRY=true/false or by editing ~/.adaptive-cards-mcp/config.json.
- v2.3.0 updates include: accessibility 100/100, fixes for JSON line breaks and title truncation issues, host-aware generation, CSV parsing fixes, telemetry /metrics endpoint, listing in the official MCP Registry, and E2E test suite.
