Outlines is a Python library for structured output from large language models, developed and maintained by the .txt team. Its core goal is to solve the problem of unpredictable LLM output—most solutions correct the output after generation through parsing, regex, or fragile code, whereas Outlines guarantees structured output during generation, obtaining results in the expected format directly from any LLM.
Main capabilities and features:
- Structured output: constrains the output structure at generation time, with no need for post-hoc parsing.
- Simple integration: just pass in the desired output type, for example model(prompt, output_type).
- Cross-model universality: the same code can run on different models such as OpenAI, Ollama, and vLLM.
- Provider-agnostic: switching models requires no code changes.
- Follows the Python type system: use Literal["Yes", "No"] for yes/no answers; use int for numeric values; use Pydantic models to define the structure of complex objects.
Usage:
- Install outlines.
- Connect to your preferred model.
- Start with simple structured output.
- Create complex structures.
Applicable scenarios (from official examples):
- Customer Support Triage
- E-commerce Product Categorization
- Parse Event Details with Incomplete Data
- Categorize Documents into Predefined Types
- Schedule a Meeting with Function Calling
- Dynamically Generate Prompts with Re-usable Templates
Ecosystem and recognition: Outlines is used by NVIDIA, Cohere, HuggingFace, vLLM, and others. The .txt API is currently in early access. The team also offers enterprise-grade library licensing and engages in frontier research on structured generation.
Limitations: Information such as specific charges, pricing, platform support details, and performance results is not yet provided in the official materials.
