codebase-recon-skill is a coding agent skill designed to understand a codebase by analyzing Git history before reading any code. It is inspired by Ally Piechowski's article "The Git Commands I Run Before Reading Any Code" and extends it with features such as auto-scaling, cross-referencing, and actionable recommendations.
Purpose
The skill is used to quickly reconnoiter a codebase, revealing project health, risk areas, team structure, and momentum. It is suitable for developers who need to quickly understand an unfamiliar codebase, or for conducting an initial assessment when taking over a new project.
Main Capabilities
The skill performs the following operations:
- Probes the repository to determine its size (small/medium/large)
- Analyzes 7 dimensions in parallel: code hotspots, bus factor, bug magnets, team momentum, firefighting frequency, recently added files, and active contributors
- Cross-references hotspots and bug magnets to identify high-risk files
- Reports findings and provides actionable recommendations
Through the analysis, users can learn about hotspot areas in the codebase, potential risks, team collaboration, and development activity.
How to Use
The skill can be installed and used in multiple ways:
- Install via skills.sh (available for 20+ coding agents), supporting Claude Code, Cline, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and any agent that supports the Agent Skills Specification.
- Install via the Claude Code plugin system: then install the plugin from the marketplace browser via /plugin.
- Install via the Codex plugin system: then run /plugins in Codex, select the Codebase Recon marketplace, and install codebase-recon.
After invoking the skill in a coding agent, it automatically performs the above analysis.
Applicable Scenarios
- A developer needs to quickly understand an unfamiliar codebase.
- A team assesses project health and risks.
- Identify high-risk areas and potential problems in the code.
- Understand team structure and development momentum.
Limitations
Using the skill requires meeting the following conditions:
- git is installed (any version)
- a git repository with commit history
In addition, the skill's specific output format, detailed report content, anddetails such as whether it supports all coding agents are not yet provided in the official materials.
